Eircom shares jump on possible bid

    November 02, 2005 12:57

Shares in telecoms group Eircom rose sharply in Dublin this afternoon after the company said it had received what it called a preliminary approach which might lead to a takeover offer for the company.

The company would not say who was behind the approach.

Eircom said last month that it was not in talks with Swisscom after media reports that the Swiss group had made overtures in about €3 billion bid.

Eircom shares were up 20 cent at €2.29 at lunchtime.

Comreg have probably been told to stay quiet while this one unravels , I fear they will oblige :(

Is it the British? Is it the Swiss? It's obviously going to be good for the shareholders, but will it be good for the Irish customer?

ComReg stay quiet no matter what :(

Will they be able to wrestle control back from the CWU?

Comreg have been told that if they open their mouths before christmas then they will be sued . There will be no new initiatives this year , none at all.

    Cash rich.

    Take time to move.

Acquisition trail at the moment, some notable purchases of late.

    Swisscom rated as Medium Risk.

May not work with CWU/ESOT in fashion predicted.

Share price temporary jump is not an indicator of strength, just speculation.

    I see!

What sort of services do they, or companies they own, tend to provide? Are they are Eircom like company or a good company?

one of the highest broadband penetration rates, a modern and well maintained network are some positive points about swisscom, negative is their opposition to local loop unbundling, however due to strong competition from cable operators this is less of a problem than it is here

If you have a well maintained modern network yes you can. Ireland doesn't actually have that. I doubt there guys will bother changing the situation.

One can make some returns. Point above is correct.
