Jobs/accomodation in Cork?

If I fail this semester in college, or when I graduate, I intend to move to Cork.

I need to know a couple of things though.

    A) How much does accomodation cost on average, and can I get somewhere near a park or some area with trees and stuff?
    B) Are there many jobs going around for people with low qualifications? I worked a semi-important job in Dell for 6 months, and got 420 points on my leaving certa, but don't have much else right now.
    C) Are there many jobs going for Computery type people?
    D) Is Cork considerably more tolerant and supportive of alternative lifestyles than limerick?
    E) Are there any tabletop RPG gamers around my age (19-20) around?

    Thanks.

    Hey Rozie!

Errr... Ive lived in Cork all my life!!!...

Im not sure about the price of accomodation!! (I live wit mammy n daddy!!!) It really depends on the qualiity of the place ure staying!!! I have friends who are renting a 3 bed house in the suburbs for 800 a month....
I have another friend renting a brand new fancy apt in the city centre for 900 a month (2bed) Im sure you can get places a bit cheaper than that.... but not as fancy!!
Errmmm on the job front!.. Im not really 100% either!!.. Im a lazy cow.. I work in an office!!... Apple computer's are always taking people on though... i worked for them before... the pay is good enough and its in the city so its cool!
Tabletop RPG gamers.... is that the game where they all have action figure type things and you get points and win and stuff?? (i could be completely wrong here!!)

Hey Rozie, hope the following helps:

    A) How much does accomodation cost on average, and can I get somewhere near a park or some area with trees and stuff?

Depends on whether you want suburbs or not. Suburbs are cheaper but you'll end up relying on a car/friend with a car/buses. City is better but more expensive (probably ~300 pm or higher for a room in a nice house, depending how much space you want). I've not found it difficult to find places with parks/greenery nearby and it shouldn't have too much of an effect on the price.

    B) Are there many jobs going around for people with low qualifications? I worked a semi-important job in Dell for 6 months, and got 420 points on my leaving certa, but don't have much else right now.

There's enough call centres around that if you can't find anything else you can always get in there. Some of them are in the city, some of them out on bus routes. Siemens & Starwood are in the city, RCI & Apple are in the suburbs but easily reached by bus, and there's more. Money's not great there, but if you're stuck it'll do. Presumably there's other stuff going as well.

    C) Are there many jobs going for Computery type people?

For proper computery stuff as opposed to IT support (ie call centre) you'll probably have to travel a bit. But there are a few "proper" IT jobs in Siemens, McAffee and Trend have recently set up operations here, Apple has a huge facility here and Schlumberger have some sort of operation going as well. That's aside from jobs with smaller companies, though with those it may be harder to get your foot in the door.

    D) Is Cork considerably more tolerant and supportive of alternative lifestyles than limerick?

Can't really answer this one as I've never lived in Limerick. For the size of the place it's pretty good but there are also a few intolerant muppets around.

    E) Are there any tabletop RPG gamers around my age (19-20) around?

There very probably are, WARPS (Wargaming And Role Playing Society, I think) is one of the biggest societies in UCC. You can either check out WARPS or just pop into Other Realms in the Paul Street Shopping Centre - they specialise in RPG gaming materials.

    Hope the above helps...

Accomodation is cheap by Dublin standards - if you are happy to live in the suburbs, you can get a room share for as little as 250-300 a month. City centre accomodation soars - most of the bedsit/studio/one bed conversions I've seen are pretty poor in standards and expensive, apartments are good but again fairly expensive, sharing however, might be a good option.

IT jobs vary - I don't think Cork is a great place for pure IT jobs. A lot of the jobs are basic hotline support jobs and some are very badly paid. Most of the entry level positions pay about 17-21k for office hours work. If you've more experience and qualifications there are excellent openings in companies like Trend, EMC and other companies, but competition is hot. Appearances are deceptive too - for example one support services company pays 17k only to start, but does have openings for more senior roles paying up to 31k or so, while a rival operation pays 21k to start but has very few opportunities for progression. What a lot of people do is start off in one of the entry level positions and then get a better job in one of the better operations after they've upgraded their skills and experience a bit.

It is worth considering distance also as only Siemens and Starwood are city centre based. If you drive the suburban companies are easy to get to, but places out of the city are hard to reach without your own transport. (For example there is a lot of development around the airport and Little Island, but both are difficult to reach without a car).

One thing I found a bit lacking in Cork is launderettes - there are very few launderettes in the city compared to Dublin/London.

A accomodation in Kinsale €250-300 PM

Kinsale is great for walks, beach, sea.

    Bus ride to Cork though

36 restaurants and some great pubs!
