I think that, if System had released Mesmertize (or Hypnorize), they'd have had a blistering metal album that would have moved the goalposts for metal in the future.

That says if they had realised Mezmerizer or Hypnotize, not and.

    They're too very different words.

Look at the spelling again - I was implying that they should have bunged the best of the two albums into one....

All you people out there sayin how system have let themselves down with hypnotize and mesmerize, what is your problem?!!!

I loved and still love the 1st 3 system albums.
I also love the 2 newest albums.

I'll tell you all what your problem is.....

For some reason, ye reckon that good system of a down music should be heavy and 'cool'. WTF??!!
    WHY???!!!!
Is it because you like being different as regards music. Not many people listened to system before mesmerise (compared to 2day), and ye probably thought " Look at me, I like listenin to this cool band with crazy heavy **** goin on. No I wont turn it down dad, because this is who I am!!"

    F**k that crap.
I've always liked system 4 their pure originality, lyrical content and (in my opinion)...musical genius.
    How has that changed??
There is more melody on the new albums. And hats off 2 the boys.
The lyrics are still class....and have you ever seen somethin as genius as the 'soldier side' saga?! Listen to Viscinity of Obscenity....its system down to the bone!!

You people gotta realise that good bands evolve, and play music that means something to them at that particular time. Like 'lonely day'means alot to D malakian, and can also be interpreted by the listener in any way. Thats the beauty of music. Why has it gotta be heavy???!!!

You people wreck my head in the same way that people who say you gotta have blistering fast solo's in good metal do. Cop on.

Music can come in many many art forms. Have any of you listened to Serj's side projects? Really different. No heavy music at all. But does that make him less a legend??

You have people that love music, but prefer metal because of its expressions etc....and you have people who love rock, but only when its heavy crap and they feel like they're rebelling. Who are you?

I don't like or dislike Hypnotize because it's not 'System', nor did I ever say that I say that System should be heavy - I don't just restrict my listening to heavy metal.

I dislike hypnotize because, if you ask me, it's sub-par for System, and 5/10 overall at best. Like I said, tracks 5,6,8 and 9 are crap if you ask me (I think Viscinity of Obscenity is one of them, not sure), and the marks go almost entirely for the first 4 and last 2 track of the album, which are rather good. But, as an album on the whole, its massively underwhelming, even when just sitting working with it as background music, theres an awful temptation to hit the next button at times, which you never get with a good album.

Maybe you like Hypnotize as an album, lucky you. I don't.

You didnt like Holy Mountains? I thought it was one of the best songs on it, parts remind me of Aerials( mainly the start)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

I thought Aerials was one of the weaker tracks on Toxicity (its all relative, Toxicity was a far better album), and Holy Mountains is definitely one of the weakest tracks (if not the weakest) on Hypnotize if you ask me. Its repetative, bland and overly dependant on stepwise progression which makes it very frustrating to listen to. Definitely one to skip in my book....

Yeah I looked at the spelling again, I still don't see where you said that.
Though I don't think the mistake was in the spelling.

To be blunt-Aereals kicks ass! it shows yet another of their numerous dimentions. Not there best, but defenitly not their worst

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    No...that doesn't explain it either.

Daaron practically wrote those 2 albums, and he felt that there was too much music between the 2 albums for anyone to appreciate at one time. Hence the 6 month gap between release dates.
I haven't read any further into this thread, but I had to post because the above statement made me laugh so much I felt I should share the laughter. I have never in all my life heard anything more absurd! They had a ton of songs and decided "we could make more money if we made it into a double cd." Then they probably thought "F*ck it, we'll release it as 2 cd's a few months apart and make a few more dollah!" and why not? Let them have at it I say, if the kids today are still stupid enough to want to listen to SOAD, then have at it - I'd rather they wasted their money on some remotely heavy pop than Girls Aloud pop.

:D ROFFLE - this thread keeps getting funnier - Ken, you should move it to Humour :)

I believe when he said 'Mesmertize (or Hypnorize)' he meant Mesmertize as in Mesmerize + Hypnotize (see what he did there) or Hypnorize as is Hypnotize + Mesmerize, i.e releasing the two as one package which would be considered superior to one allright release and one dreadful release :v:

Couldn't have put it better myself, except I'd say Mesmerize is actually reasonably good, and Hypnotize is "meh".

The one superior release, which I have since burnt to CD, is actually really really good. SOADs best album they never released...

Did you use any special tracklisting or just burn one album after the other? (This is really reminding me of Tools Holy Gift where you re-organise the tracklisting of Lateralus to uncover a secret message dealing with moving through consciousness as a movement of along spirals. I have still to try this.)

    Haha no way!
I thought that was just an honest typo, but yeah...I thikn the whole thing could have been improved to be on-par with the SOAD we all know, had the good of both been released as one.

I changed the track list a bit OK. Heres what I've got, its reasonably well paced in that its fast -> slow -> fast again -> slow
    1. System Of A Down - Soldier Side - Intro - Mezmerize (1:03)
    2. System Of A Down - B.Y.O.B. - Mezmerize (4:15)
    3. System Of A Down - Revenga - Mezmerize (3:48)
    4. System Of A Down - Attack - Hypnotize (3:06)
    5. System Of A Down - Radio/Video - Mezmerize (4:09)
    6. System Of A Down - Kill Rock 'N Roll - Hypnotize (2:27)
    7. System Of A Down - Hypnotize - Hypnotize (3:09)
    8. System Of A Down - Violent Pornography - Mezmerize (3:31)
    9. System Of A Down - Question! - Mezmerize (3:20)
    10. System Of A Down - Sad Statue - Mezmerize (3:25)
    11. System Of A Down - Cigaro - Mezmerize (2:11)
    12. System Of A Down - Old School Hollywood - Mezmerize (2:56)
    13. System Of A Down - Lonely Day - Hypnotize (2:47)
    14. System Of A Down - Soldier Side - Hypnotize (3:39)

Playing Time: 43 minutes 46 seconds

Overall, its good. Hypnotize -> Violent Pornography goes pretty well, but Cigaro seems to be a bit misplaced wherever you put it.

Hypnotise is a poor mans mesmerise..... the songs sound as if they were simply not good enough for mesmerise, i just hope it was not a money making scheme. The vocals sound the same on alot of songs, i'd get over the wording of them though..... most soad songs are rather strange in this field. The best tracks are probably hypnotise, lonely day and soldier side, but again i think these would struggle to get onto the mesmerise album and definatly toxicity. Bad Album from a band with so much talent.

i thought mezmerize was much better but thats not to say that hypnotize aint without its charms.not as good though.

A few posts back i said i thought Hypnotize was better than Mezmerize but now i'm not so sure...... i still like both of them but maybe Mezmerize is better alright

when i first heard mez i was like "wtf is this balls then, this is watered down bs" then eventually I came to love it and think is every bit a system album just a slightly different one but it was clear the direction they where going when u look through the pass albums going from the shear aggression of the first album to a eventually refine their sound. As for hypo I'm not sure but atm after 2 listens I would say its a weaker mez but not without its charms.
