JavaScript Error

Hi all - Can anyone with Netscape 4.x figure out the error with the DHTML menu at the top - it says layer 1 of the menu does not exist while it seems to later on. It may be useful to compare it with the HTML at www.boards.ie/bulletin - the old menu - maybe you can see whatever I can't. Thanks, John. --

I can't see the problem as I don't have NS 4.x on my machine at the moment, but it sounds familiar.
If you're referencing something that hasn't been 'created' on the page you'll get a not defined error.

Say you've got a textbox at the bottom of a page and a script that does something with that textbox at onLoad().
The textbox won't be available to the Javascript until it has been output onto the page. Weird I know, but then again this is Javascript.

Try testing for null.

Is the problem with window.onload perhaps? Maybe try changing it to document.onload, or changing it to a distinct function and using onLoad in the BODY tag instead? I'd go for the latter meself.

Yep I changed it from window.onload to document.onload, it got rid of the JavaScript error but the menus still don't appear fully...

I have an idea in my head (rare I know) that you had the exact same problem on the UBB forums a while back, and you fixed it after a little screwing about. I could be wrong, but if I'm not, can you remember what you did then? Is it archived?

That's it you see, the HTML at www.boards.ie/cgi-bin/bulletin/Ultimate.cgi (the old stuff - sorry, I gave the old URL above) works okay in NS, but the new one (which I pretty much took from the old, but had to change for a dynamic list via PHP) doesn't...

Actually, the old one doesn't work either - doh!

Maybe have a look on the www.dhtmlcentral.com forum or on one of the Tutorials. Its run by a guy called Thomas Brattli from Norway. He does a lot stuff on solving javascript problems in NN4 and other older versions. I sorted probs w/ my drop downs there. The forum is very good:)
