    hey all,

i need to acces something else other then stupid http pages. something like ftp and telnet but the stupid firewall in college is not letting me do it and the IT department is leaving it on a leash becasue of "security purposes" (well, looks like they are worse then eircom :) )

anyway, i tried tunnelin' through http proxy using http-tunnel but to no avail. before i give up my chances of outsmarting the IT dept. and going to their premises on my knees to beg for the access, can anyone suggest anything else. please :) (logic1 tried to help with it by setting up a bounce server, but it didnt work)

I used to have a problem like that not sure if its the same thing though but for me I got an error message saying ftp protocol was not set up on the proxy server so i used a Ftp program and it worked fine dunno why if you wanna get an ftp program try this site and search for ftp!

BTW Leech ftp is free and a easy one to use!

DeSilva, its not that simple. they blocked the access whether you use one ftp program or another. all you can basically do is browse the internet. that is also controlled through a http proxy which doesnt work mr ftp. thanks anyway

    http://www.deny.de/sss/telplug.html

iv given that link to loads of people about the country in different colleges and it seems to do the best job.

let me know if it works.

yeh I'm in same situation, none of those tunnel progs will work for me. Only small gain I've made is finding

    www.safeweb.com

go to that, type in the ftp address and off you go. It won't let you d/l huge files, but at least you can look at ftp pages and d/l small files. Its slowish, and the little earth anim top right of browser doesn't go around even when its still receiving data, so be patient. ;)

if you make any other inroads into this, please mail me.

yeah, i have tried safeweb.com. it works to an extent but it doesnt give me the full usege when it comes to ftp. you cant upload or download files bigger then 5 megs. which is useless.

I sense a bit of jealousy.....

Have a look through the old posts, there's been a topic on this before.

yeah, i was a bit pissed off cause i'm not getting proper "internet" access at the college im attending and i think it beats the whole purpose of having "internet" access in the first place where most protocols are banned and even some websites have been proxy disabled. its like paying full price for a hotel room and find out that all the good tv channels have been blocked ;)

what risk? this is a college, an educational center, place of learning etc. not a ****ing nuclear reactor or a corpration that needs to protect itself from script kiddies and the likes.

to be honest fink, i'm the last person in the world that would cause hassle to the IT dept. i love the guys/gals, they are the ones running and keeping the network alive and provinding us with the mad out knowledge out on the internet. but to completely block basic protocols that allow people to communicate is a step too far in protecting their cherished network.

Sometimes not mate... security is every institutions prime concern, companies, colleges, everywhere!! Colleges especially... I reckon they'd be the most abused networks, possibly most hacked... due to the usual thought that colleges don't implement tough enough security. These aren't facts by the way. Just my thoughts... which I may have heard somewhere before! I'm not gonna argue with ye either

The problem is that hacker skum see colleges as a stepping stone on to larger things as they have alot of computing power and general underfunded IT support so things may not be as secure as they could be. Just because a college is not a nuclear reactor doen't mean things shouldn't be protected.

You might not, but can you say that for every single other person in you class? Part of the reason that Maynooth has gone from allow everthing to deny everything is because of stundents fu<king about and setting up unauthorised servers that then get hacked and cause even greater problems (or in the case of ftp and file sharing server, eat the bandwidth up). We're not too happy that we've had to go this way, but there is very little we can do. The resources are simplely not there to do anything else.

That that's cause that's all coming through the proxy. You can ftp stuff down through the proxy, but not up. You do know the proxy logs are monitered? And I know who is logged on where? ;)

Now that is something I completely disagree with and I would certainly not agree to something like that being implemeneted on my network.
