    I have to remove the modem cable from the back of my PC every time I try to connect.

    How do I make it so I don't have to do this?

    If you post back could you make it a simple as possible i.e.,
    Contol panel - Modems Options ............... (Or whatever)

    that sounds like the modem is what is rong not esat.
    make sure that your useing the right drivers and that you that the right hardware control on the modem setings. ie xon/xoff
    or hardware (controlpanel->system->modem->propaties)
    try to set it to the other on than what it is all ready on and do the same with the com por if needed(if your useing a pci modem it uses com port 3 make sure its on port 3)

    Do you have to use any typ of y-splitter/adpter? USR OEM modems need an adapter (Even to provide a straight pass through) because of an electrical characteristic problem. This used to happen on Gateways for a while.

    If you did receive an adapter try the line in both slots.
