i recently sold a computer to a m8 of mine with an iomega cdrw, there was a problem with the D: rom on it, so he formatted the computer , and then replaced the D: Drive with a brand new cdrom, new everytime he tries to copy a music cd it ends up with a load of crackles on it, anyone got any ideas as to what could cause this? any help much appreciated.

Is it all CD's or just one or two? Sony is trialing 'Cactus' CD protection... Albums with Cactus protection are spiked with rogue data. Regular players ignore it and play it as normal, but when the discs are copied onto CD-R, the extra data is read, adding noise to your music. You can cirumvent this with a RAW copy, which copies discs by reading each pit.

Ask him to try and rip an old CD maybe 2 years old first....the current copy protection stuff is nasty (like said above). It adds in stuff to the built-in error correction that CD players have......only a stereo/hifi will correct it like a scratch or dust, but a CDROM is much much more sensitive and picks up all the crap.

Also, by "copy" what do you mean? A direct CD to CD copy usign Nero or something? Or in trying to rip it first using CDex or something.

If it's direct CD copying, what CPU/RAM/HD speed, as they all matter a lot in that case. Ask him to do a basic rip to .WAV files of a single song using CDex first, don't try burning anything until the songs are clean and on the hard disk.
