What are your thoughts on this?It looks like it'll be the biggest selling game of this year just like Smackdown! 2 did last year.And despite doubt at first this game will cement Playstation 2's future to come.What makes this game great is that it is actually like wrestling!Here are some features;

-Over 70 match types
-Over 45 wrestlers(Including ECW wrestlers)
-Walk around in Story Mode visit the commissioners office,Vince's office, the APA, pin the hardcore champ and win the title, interfere in any match that may be going on and start a feud with wrestlers or maybe an alliance
-Over 1000 Create-A-Wrestler parts using all new features
-DVD disc which means more features and short loading

Well that's enough of that I'm getting it!What about you?

BTW Release Date:23/11/01

I'm sure it's great and all that but it will be a sub-artic day in the very bowels of hell before I buy anything based on "professional" wrestling.

Since you seem so convinced that this game will "cement the future of the PS2", it's worth noting that WWF: Raw is War on the Xbox has been getting better preview responses.

They both look dog-ugly though. Typical sub-standard licensed crap; take a look at DoA3 on Xbox and compare with Raw is War. Same goes for Soul Calibur 2 compared to Just Bring It. Bloody ridiculous that this pap is going to sell so much off that back of the franchise...

As for being the biggest game this Christmas, I personally doubt it. I don't think the PS2 demographic is set up for that yet; SmackDown! 2 only did well on the PSone once you got to the stage where every weenie kiddie in the country had one. PS2 isn't at that stage yet.

Sure those games aint meant to look good!
They are the biggest laugh when your at home with a few mates and some beers. I guarantee that within an hour you'll be practicing the moves on each other :) Imo its a great laugh just to take the piss with.

• Registered Users Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

The main reason the 1st Smackdown! sold so much is because it was the best looking wrestling game with WWF wrestlers. So every kiddie got it to play as their fave wrestler blah blah blah.
Compare that to the likes of soul Calaber 2,its look AMAZING,defo gonna get it,on the gamecube of X-box,doesnt matter to me.

Shinji how can you compare DOA3 and Soul Calibur2 with wrestling games. They are different games .Yes they may be fighting games but the difference is wrestling games have more characters more options and last up to 100 times longer then any orther fighting game.Play DOA3 it will look great it will last a week after you have cleared it with every character .1 on 1 beat em ups do look great but that is because there are a lack of options.I have been following both smackdown 3 and Raw is War very closley. You dont have to worry about ECW and WCW not being in the game as there is an option in were you can create a shirt with the letters.I have seen Rhyno is a hidden character so to is Mick Floey and Fred Durst ? ? I have heard that we could see some extra ECW characters as the game has been delayed due to some last minute changes .I have seen this game being played and it looks fantastic .Commentry is a little rough but the all round game looks great. The ref steps in and tries to stop outside interference so when he is doing this you grab a chair and wrapp it around your opponents head and pin him.You can even beat up the commentator if he is annoying you :p

OK Shinji
Since you find my comment funny i take it you disagree with it what is just leaves my dieing to find out what normal 1 on 1 beat em ups have to offer for longevity, for an example doa2 ?

hmmm, you forgot the muddy graphics (which, frankly, aren't much better than a PS1 game), lousy collision detection and horrible control system.

My little brother has three wrestling games. I played them all. I won't be doing so again.

I've read down through that list, and there's not one reason that would make me choose it over the likes of Street Fighter. Since when does things like "Pyro in entrances", "3D referee" etc make for good gameplay?

The game is being sold on the licence alone - if there was no licence, Smackdown game wouldn't shift a single copy.

Dre As In Dray is right about all the things he said about Smackdown! JBI!.You see your problem is that your not fans of wrestling so you don't appreciate the little touches such as the 3-D Ref.all the new features make it like real wrestling which I enjoy,so I appreciate the new touches. And Rob Van Dam and Tommy Dreamer are signed to WWF for the past few months so they could make their way to the game! For anyone that cares in here! And in my opinion the graphics are not sub-standard but actually great for a game that could of looked like absolute crap and sold millions.

<img src="http://ps2media.ign.com/media/previews/images/wwf/wwfz_9.jpg">

By looking at this picture you can't say that looks 32-bit NekkidBibleMan.And BTW these aren't even the best pics I've seen!

<img src="http://ps2media.ign.com/media/previews/images/jbi/jbi_41.jpg">

Thanks for backing me up Dre As In Dray

Lets learn with NekkidBibleMan...

Here, we have a shot of Smackdown 2 for the PSOne - a 32bit console.
psone.jpg

Notice the blocky model and low-quality textures - the tattoo for example.

Here, we have a shot of Smackdown 3 for the PS2 - a 128bit console.

Notice the blocky model and low-quality textures - the tattoos for example.

Here, we have a shot of Soul Calibur 2 for the GameCube - a 128bit console .

Notice the smooth characters. The smooth, crisp textures. The little effects like smoke and motion blurring. The lack of saggy manbreasts.

Well now you are comparing graphics .Graphics for me are not that important, they can make the game look great but when it comes down to it there is alot more to games then just graphics.Sure the only football game i enjoy playing is Sensible World Of Soccer no other football game can touch it when it comes to game play yet graphics are terrible.Games like Soul Calibur can show off its graphics as there is not much more to it.Every game you play are the same moves on the same levels.Take smackdown JBI you are getting a complete fighting package . lousy collision detection has been sorted out on this version as i have seen and horrible control system ? ? Have you ever played Acclaim or EAs wrestling games ? Now that is horrible .Smackdown never had horrible control.

• Registered Users Posts: 11,446 ✭✭✭✭amp

I believe NekkidBibleMan wins. Loving WWF and it's related merchandise is something to repress within oneself, not preach about.

I mean a game about fights that are staged? If it was a true simulation you'd be out in the fifth round (or whenever the script writer decides).

Remember kids, say no to saggy manbreasts.

• Registered Users Posts: 10,581 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Graphics for me are not that important

Yet they make it to #6 in your list of why you should buy SmackDown 3....
Games like Soul Calibur can show off its graphics as there is not much more to it

You haven't played Soul Calibur. That much is obvious. If you had played it, you wouldn't be typing such utter rubbish. Soul Calibur has depth - I was playing it for months on end.
Smackdown never had horrible control.

I actually went and played it just over an hour ago. The controls are for simpletons, it promotes button bashing. There are no taxing moves or combos to learn off. Not to mention the clumsiness of the wrestler's movement on screen....

Please, go and play Street Fighter or Tekken.... even play Mortal Kombat. Your love of wrestling is just clouding your judgement.

Your love of wrestling is just clouding your judgement.

No, his love of wrestling is indicating a much deeper lack of any judgement whatsoever in the first place...

I despair, I really do. This stuff is targetted at six to twelve year olds for christs sake, and even the publisher probably knows that it's just a licence to print money and not a quality series of games...

*shrug* If you want to be ripped off buying this sh1t, feel free, and if you can delude yourself into thinking it's a great game, all the better. More games bought is more money in my pocket at the end of the day, so I guess it's churlish to wish that folk were buying GOOD games... :D

Well i dont even have to argue for for smackdown as i know it can argue for itsself on sales. It is true what shinji said about christmas No1.It will be though for it to get there due to lack of PS2's,but i still feel it might nick it.The game itself might increase the sales of PS2 this christmas .

• Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

The sales argument doesn't hold water. How many times recently have you seen Westlife or Britney Spears outselling everything else in the music charts, eh?

Well what a great business man you would make .Sales dont hold water ?? Just because somthing does'nt suit your taste doesnt mean its crap .Majority rules and the world does revolove around shinji .Its weird i always took you for a britney fan :p

• Registered Users Posts: 8,048 ✭✭✭BKtje

Sure we'll see ina couple of months which of you is right :)

Dre = wrestling fanatic type guy
Nekkid = Hardcore gamer type person
Shinji = Most experience gamer here (the old guy ;))

And back to Smackdown! yes the controls DO suck,it DOES promote button bashing and the lastability of these games ARENT great.....I have played all of em,got bored of all of em within the week.Compaired to soulcaliber,it lasted me months,2player wise its the best fighting game there is.And the Soul caliber 2 looks amazing.
the edit a charecter gets boring after yer 1000000th wrestler,it only adds an extra week at most to the game. And yes,i do strongly advise getting Soul caliber..or even soulblade!!! cos there both 1st class fightring games and will show you how good a fighting game can be..........

Yes but it works in reverse, your argument that it sells well doesn't mean it's any good, it just means lots of kids go out and buy it. And parents who don't know anything about gaming see the words WWF and Playstation and buy it as a present.

In other words: don't believe the hype.

P.s. bitterly disapointed not to make it into Pugsleys list :(

I love you amp!

And I know better than to argue with Shinj when it comes to games :)

Thank you Nbm, the Games moderators appreciate your words of kindness. Even more so we appreciate umarked currency.....

And yes, I faced up against the Shinj once and lost - Rob knows all.

I just feel the need to give a link to this. Its another example of frink's great topic making. Rob liked it (and had forgotten it) when i gave him the link in irc the other night, so im sure some of ye mungs will too :)

The control 'system' (oh i feel soo dirty) is pants.
you slooooooooowly turn to teh riiiight and then get clumped by the opponent.
Can these big lumps of cologen-injected-peks not strafe? IS that such a new concept? Oooh-ho-ho i forgot! Ikkle Kiddi-widdies wouldn't want anything tht might actually make the 'game'(again i despise myself for that) any more complex or challenging
This really is a kiddies game. Or for bashing after a (good) few pints on a early sunday morning.
[Sarcasm]Oh-ho what jovial lark this amusement is! Look at it's finely crafted textures! Be wowed by it's amazing array of (reptative)moves, each character's one (slightly) different from the last![/Sarcasm]
This is typical PSX derivitive pish. i wouldn't even rest my Java mug on it for fear my chipboard desk would be ashamed.

Gamingplanet 4/5
Gamecritics 8.5

I can go on but i just dont have the time at the moment.Im pritty sure the people who rate these games are not kids .The smackdown release this year will be though as there wont be much kids able to buy it due to the price of a PS2 and the £50 price tag on the game itself .When the last smackdowns came out 1 in 3 people had a PSX in Ireland .At the moment for the Ps2 its 1 in every 15 people .Will smackdown 3 make it #1 ?
Tune in next month and see :p

Interesting how all the magazines are aimed at 13 year olds, isn't it?

Games mags in general (but perhaps more so the format specific ones) aren't honest. They have to please their advertisers, they have to give concessions to get an "exclusive" review and they have to tell their readers what they wan to hear.

If its an exclusive review, take it with a pinch of salt.
If there's a full page ad for the publisher right beside the review, take it with a pinch of salt.
If its the most hyped game of the year, take it with a pinnch of salt.
If the magazine you're reading has big yellow writing on the cover with exclamation marks randomly placed throughout, take it with a pinch of salt.
If you're reading a format-specific magazine and its a format exclusive game, take it with a pinch of salt.

Well that is the best sence i have ever heard.

If a game is a top selling game ,and if it getting the highest ratings games can get and has web pages dedicated to it and has been hyped up, and all this happening not just on the origional but also on the second release of it you are saying is sh!te ? No offence but are you one of these people that thinks the rest of the world is wrong and you are right ? You say my love of wrestling is clouding my judgment ,is it not your hatred for wrestling is clouding yours .
