With the i-Stream solo thingy(the cheapest ADSL offer) it says it is only for one user.

If you hook up the ADSL modem to an ethernet network would each computer on the network be able to use the internet? Or would they each need their own IP address or something?

i would presume that if your computer with the ethernet card has ipmasquerading set up that you would be able to have multiple users using that connection with your computer as their gateway.
eircom probably have something in the contract prohibiting this but there is not real way for them to inforce this short of breaking into your premises and looking at the computers for themselves.

No, you'd just set up an internal LAN on the "inside" of the machine connected to the ADSL box.

On the LAN, all the machines can have whatever IP they want, and use DHCP or something to make sure they get the latest IP from the dynamic assignment given to the firewall and ADSL-conncected box.

Also, this way all traffic is through that one box so it's still only one computer and one user using the connection....

The easy way is basically to have one machine dedicated to route all traffic to the LAN, and it could be a Pentium 60 for all it really matters. Linux is good for things like this.

Or there are ADSL hub things, but I'm sure that doing that would breach the "one computer" bit.

Or you could even more easily use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) if you're a Windows user.

The ideal solution is probably to use a DSL modem/router combo though - much less hassle.

Indeed, I was just thinking that *that's* the sort of thing Eircom would have a problem with.

Then again, you could easily argue in a court that the single computer that is using the SINGLE line into the house is a router computer.

And you and your entire family are just using it on a separate network, simple as that.

It's a ridiculous situation anyway - I have no problem with the general ban on having web servers or FTP sites from a DSL connection, but the "single user single computer" thing is akin to a Microsoft EULA, which even still allows you to install Windows on your desktop and laptop using one license.

They would have to prove that the user has more than one computer connected to the DSL line, which is impossible for them as they have only provided one line anyway, QED.
