Just looking for opinions on the state of rock music and heavy metal today. Myself I haven't been too interested in Heavy Metal for about 5 years, although I still listen to bands like Metallica and Dream Theatre. What about the new generation of Heavy bands coming out, like Linkin Park and Limp Biskit et al.
Back in the 80s and 90s there was a graduation from Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi being light metal, going up to Medeth, slayer, Sepultura and then all those woeful Death Metal bands.
These days it is pop music that rules the airwaves, and the new heavy bands seem to sound very pop like. I'm sure there are still plenty of Heavy Metal bands going, but all the well known bands are far too pop for my liking.
    Any one else find this?

    Of course.

    Maiden & Metallica ruled.

These new "Heavy Metal" Bands are simply pop.
Rebelion is the music industry's new marketing tool.
Papa Roach & Linkin Park, nothing but pre-packadged angst.

Whereas the likes of Iron Maiden were (And still are) HUGE, today's metal must be searched for.
There's prenty of great music out there, not just metal.
You just have to look for it.

You shouldn't have any problems finding Iced Earth's "Horror Show" album, which I seriously reconmend to anyone.
There's stuff like that around, that just reminds you there are still real musicians making fantastic music out there, and still being really original and inventive.

I think you shouldn't be letting all this go to your head... As the man Philip Anselmo says himself... "We've beaten all the trends and we'll keep beating em too". And I think he is right... this trend will only last for a year and then they'll be into some band dressed up as Barbie's. LOL I also heard that Korn's next album is supposed to sound like Morbid Angel (ROTFLMMFAO). Do you think Korn's kiddie fans will like this?

damn right, Tool rock! they are the radiohead of metal imo.
the best of the rest are metallica, marilyn manson, rage against the machine, and the deftones

Well listening to limp bizkit, papa roach and linkin park et al is better than listening to pop music...but dear god they suck, especially the pathetic 'my parents shouted out me' type ****ty angst

There are plenty of excellent real metal bands out there, but thery aren't nearly as popular as the afformentioned 'pop and roll' (:p) bands.

The problem is, that bands like Tool just go so far over people's heads.
Inteligent music isn't popular because most people prefer their pop.

I've said this before and I'll say it again:
People would rather go and see 100's of "Jurassic Park 3" type films rather than a couple of "Memento" type films.

Give someone who listens to pop some "Opeth", and I garauntee, they wouldn't be able to comprehend it.
No more so than a person who would watch all these "Teen Comedies" could be able to comprehend something like "The Usual Suspects"...

It would just go over their heads.

If you like Tool though, you should try Opeth, Akercocke, and Emperor... They are very complex, artistic and deep bands, although quite heavier than Tool.

If tool is the way forward, I'd rather go backward. Back to the days of Pantera, megadeath, slayer, and further back again to black sabath, led zeppelin & spinal tap. I'm very disappointed about the route metal has taken. I hate nu-metal with a vengance, but at least it gives us lots of people to insult.

Its always been so, who said you'll never be poor
under- estimating the taste of the public?.
One of my fav rock/metal acts in the 80/90's was Queensryche but it was Bon Jovi that sold all the records...that Q had very
hummable tunes did'nt matter, they had the "wrong"
    sound.

yeah, guns and roses made OK music, but it was still pretty pop-py IMO. songs like november rain and sweet child o' mine were damn popular, but they were obviously designed to sell records.
Guns and Roses were never remotely artistic though.

Yes... cos I do not like Korn. Duh!

And the "kiddie" term stood for their fans aged 9-15. (most of them in other words).

I'd like to see Korn try... but they are nowhere near Morbid Angel.

Mainstream music is just there to cater for the brain dead generation, who don't like to use their brains too much (that's if they can use them at all).

There's plenty of real music around, that is actually meaningful, you just have to look a little harder.

Use that as your sig Bren... It sounds pretty cool and it will get through to as you say brain dead people on this board (don't deny it, there is some).

There is seriously no way anyone can win with rock music.

People complain and complain and complain about there not being enough "Rock" on the radios, then as soon as some rock bands get played on the radio or MTV they're immediately branded as "Pop-Rock" and sell-outs.

Every genre has its high points and its lows, so don't paint every band in a category with the same ****ty brush, cos it is not true.

Then again, if everyone just had a 'lil bit of Pumpkinage in their lives, the world would be such a better place :)

I really don't care what gets radio play, because I don't listen to the radio either way most of the time. My problem is that people like westlife and all that **** are promoted as being some sort of talented group who write meaningful songs, and we should be proud of them because they're Irish, that's a bunch of ****. They should be burned alive for their sins.

In Norway, Dimmu Borgir played at the equivalent of the grammy awards there, and a lot of people blame that for the decline in the underground black metal scene there. Suddenly it's got all this attention, and everyone wants to be part of something that they don't belong to.

And if Pumpkinage is a reference to Smashing Pumpkins, I'd agree. I don't like the band personally, but they are good at what they do and they have talent and all that. But Emperor are better:D

Now thats dodgy if I've ever seen what dodgy is... Which I mightn't have...
As I myself could be dodgy, and not know it...

But I like both The Pumpkins & Emperor... So that could be the far superior opinion... Or just downright dodgy... :D

    I'm feeling sick now...
