...the format of a .xls file?

Basically I want to hook a cash register up to a PC and program the cr to generate a file instead of printing a report. But there's no point in generating a plain text file unless I want to program an entire accounting package to use it! biggrin.gif It has to be something like a .xls so excel can use it.

Export the file to a .csv file i.e. a comma separated file this can instanly be opened by Excel. Just follow the basic rules of EDI for csv and there you go.

Why not export into text then import into Excel and work on it there?

Failing that you can go look at Wotsits site
