The chief executive of BT Retail, Pierre Danon, has confirmed that the telco will be cutting the price of ADSL in the near future in a bid to prevent undercutting by cable companies. Taking part in a live Web cast debate Danon said, "I agree that today consumer prices especially are too high".

In defence of BT he pointed to the regulatory framework that BT has to operate within. Danon also highlighted the recent reduction of the ADSL wholesale cost to ISPs to £30 per month. However, while BTopenworld offers broadband connection for £39.99 a month, NTL offers an ADSL package and a 128 kbps connection, launched Monday, for £25 and £14.99 per month respectively.

The cuts cannot come too soon according to the Communications Management Association. In a survey published this week two thirds of responding companies claim to want affordable broadband access but are unable to get it.
