right, following on from my imploded pc last week, can someone really briefly (please) run me through changing the HD? I've never done this before so maybe it'd be better to bring it in to a store in dublin-in that case does anyone know a decent place in central dublin? ALso any idea of costs would be nice ;)

    thanks folks

It's a pretty easy replacement job don't worry, presuming it's IDE:

Leave the PC plugged in but turned off, before you take the replacement Hdd out of the antistatic bag, or touch anything inside the PC, touch the back of the case (Bare metal) - this will earth you (Static is dangerous to electronics).
Remove the side cover and locate the existing HDD.
There will ne 2 cables going into it. ONe small power cable (Red,2 Black,Yellow wires, White plug) and the IDE cable (large, flat, grey).
remove both from the back of the drive and undo the screws holding it in place, then slide it out, slide the new one in.
Reconnect the power cable (it only goes in one way) and the IDE cable (This should be keyed with a notch, but if not just remember the red-dotted edge of the cable will always face the power cable).
Power the system up and make sure the new HDD is detected. If it is redo the screws, if not double check the cables and their orientaion (also trace the IDE cable to the motherboard and make sure it is seated securely there).

    Things to watch for:
Your Original HDD should be set as a Master drive, so make sure your new drive is the same. Master/Slave can be set via a groups of pins and jumpers at the back of the drive, the manual for the HDD should have clear instructions on how to set the Master/Slave jumpers.
If the system hangs on boot up double check you have the IDE cable the right way around (red/dotted edge facing power cable).
You may have to enter the system BIOS when it's booting find the IDE/DRIVE section, Primary Master and set the detection here to AUTO. Then save and exit.

As its a new drive, you will then need to partition (fdisk) and format the drive before you can use it.
