I need a new 56k modem. My current one that I got with my new TIME PC is a piece of total and utter crap. I get disconnected trying to play TFC and I can not download any files without the modem crashing me off the internet. In fact my modem (made by PCtel ; bunch of ****ers) is a 'soft modem'. Having read an article on soft modems at www.56k.com I can safely say that it is the modem causing me problems. Not my ISP or my new PC but the modem itself. So , I was wondering if any of you cats could reccomend a decent modem. It does not have to be the best on the market. Just a solid 56k modem. As the title suggests , any opinion is appreciated( as long as it has to do with 56k modems. No smart **** posts please ) . Thanks smile.gif

I think the general opinion is that Pace are the best. Hard to get but the best.

Well the general opinion is that modemers are not |33t. wink.gif

    oh god no

modemers are the scourge of the earth.
Lucky for us Eircom, that fantastic company that it is, is desperately trying to lower isdn prices and is about to get public DSL up and running. Imagine if we were stuck with modems for the next year or so..that'd be funny wouldn't it.

Yes indeed...........I guess we'll be laughing then.

Whoa whoa whoa! Ok , even though I said no smart **** replys , some new info has come to light from one . What is all this dsl talk? I contacted Eircom about it a couple of months back and they said we could not expect it until next year at the earliest. I would gladly become l33t and get a DSL connection if they will be available soon smile.gif But forget ISDN . Too little ,too late.

DSL has nothing to do with cable, thats cable modems (another development still up in the air, get it if you live in malahide smile.gif

DSL is like a fibre optic connection straight to your house, through a lan card I presume....dunno yet, its only really established itself in the states.

it's pathetic to be talking about modems when I have a fibre optic cable sitting un-used running past the door about 6ft from where i'm sitting mad.gif

    but neways....

I have a crappy 56k wimodem voice and it's utter ****e! I can only ever connect at 33k, which after several tries with phone lines, diff pcs, etc is due to a software problem.

There is a fix available for the US and a US/EIRE fix promised for early may, LAST ****ING YEAR! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

The problem is, if I go out and buy a spanking new 56k hardware pased modem, how do I know it will get my connection up to 56k?

hmmm.. My Motorola voicesurfr connects to whoever (mostly Esat) at 56k 95% of the time and I've used it in Phibsboro, Rathfarnham and Dun Laoghaire. I thought windows was lying to me but linux and BeOS said the same.

    Strange, no?

to be honest, im not sure what the state of play with different conns are at the mo.
i work with someone who is part of esat and closely linked with BT and he says that isdn prices should shortly fall to the exact same pricing as an anologue line. ie 20 quid per 2 months rental, 100 quid instillaion without replacing an anolgue line.
which is good news for modemers with little money. oh, same rates as usual for phone. not sure what the isps are going to do if that happenes. could be they will go for the isdn no limits...i dunno

as for dsl, i know nothing. its about gettin a permanent conn through your tv cable isnt it? no phone bills, just a yearly subscription. only problem witht that as far as ive heard is that if you are stuck on the end ofthe cable, all the bandwidth will be taken by porn saving adolecences futher up the line smile.gif

as for the modem, it really does depend. i have a pace which connects at 44kbs no matter where i am. my mother has a piece of generic packard bell crap that connects at 49k and gives a smther conn as well. thats the way it goes. pure luck unfortuantely. just dont go for any win modems as they use your cpu and slow down everything blah blah blah.
jget a cheap for 50 quid, see how it goes, brin it back if its not up to scratch, or just wait for cable....
