Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Its the way ppl look down on other ppl is sickening, its worst than all those images we posted.

If one behaves like a muppet, he/she will get treated like one. You guys have only yourselves to blame if people 'look down' on you. Muppetry of that nature is not welcomed and some of you guys bring it upon yourselves. In fairness, what do you expect ? a kiss 'n cuddle and say 'yes, its ok if you offend everyone with your bullsh1t?'

People are respected for what they do for other people, not what they do against them!.

Back to the point in hand. Theres some good suggestions here, I honestly don't know whats the best thing is to do, thats really up to you guys. I think the words for the moment has to be 'zero tolerence' tho.

Zero isn't just tolerated. Some people have grown to care for and respect him over the years.

    I don't, but that's because he's a scobe with homo-erotic mullet obsessive tendencies.

I wouldn't say "obsessed" with mullets, but when I see one I have to stare, thinking to myself: "jesus christ that guy actually walks around trying to pick up chicks, looking like THAT!!

    I mean...look:
    camaromullet.jpg

And dont lie, yours wasnt far off that :)
I'm not a scober, but I would pick scobe over mullet anyday.

Im gonna have to say your wrong. Like look at my first post ever, it was about telling the cs cumminity our prices and tournaments here in ie so i done a small site just to let ppl know what was going on.http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=25846
From that day on i was discusted with the way ppl were treating others espeiscally newbies, look at the reply logic gave very mature from an admin. What i think yee should do is look at the ppl putting other ppl down for no reason at all and il bet yee will get less muppetry from the likes of us. Im not trying to start any arguments but its my point of view and i bet its other ppl view also.

Does your going on about how you were treated when you first posted count as the "I had a traumatic childhood yer'honor!" defence, given you just became the second person to be banned from the board for muppetry above and beyond the call of duty?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 197 ✭✭[CAS]Dino

Dont be so worried about me rob, i wont post on cs anymore probally be better for the cs cumminty anyway. But all im saying get those feckers who put ppl down all da time and u will get less

Anyone who has ever really worked at managing any online/virtual communities knows banning really doesn't work. It does often tend to have the opposite effect, and just gives the banned individual a challenge to cause more problems.

Even worse is the silly notion of banning an IP of a public internet cafe, or blaming the management of a public internet cafe for the actions of some of their clients. Do any of you have someone watching over your shoulders, telling you what is appropriate to type or not? If you do, I suggest moving out of mum's house and getting on with your own life.

There are some (potentially) easy technology solutions, but I'll bet DeVore would rather not hear them...Bozo/Twit filters, community filtering, non-image forums...these have all proven invaluable in other community efforts. They may not be part of vBulletin, and therein lies a problem.

And before you get bent out of shape about this being my first post, let me say even first posts may contain value, and if the password retrieval feature did not work for my previous account name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,660 ✭✭✭Baz_

Well in the past it has worked to ban certain individuals, so what can I say.

As regards the management of the inet cafe, I think it was on one of the lan nights or something, in which there may have been a mod present to say whether stuff was appropriate or not. Thats why Dino apologised, in this very thread.

I'm sure after the headache of the move DeV would love to hear new ideas about keeping the muppetry to a minimum, I'm sure in fact he'd love to hear them now, he just may be loathe to implement them. Although our posts are edited (or at least viewed with an eye to editing), a lot of people get away with a lot of foolishness and thats the way most people like it but when you start implementing Bozo filters (what the hell is that anyway) you start going over the top IMHO.

Nobody would have gotten bent out of shape over it, cept maybe dev for his own paragraph.

HAHAHA I'd forgotten just how funny that thread was.

And to be honest Dino you came in with a **** site advertising a net cafe and the second people told it like it was you flew off the handle and thus the muppetry from cork began.

Little has changed it seems since those first days and this thread which is again discussing the muppetry from cork which has provoked this whole crack down. I admit it certainly isn't even close to the only incident but it was the deciding factor in a crackdown on crime (a.k.a muppetry)

I said ban the whole of cork from everything for ever. And especially Dino.

    .logic.

Hmmm .logic., u think banning that whole cafe well solve the muppetry, u do know that all the ppl that use this cafe have internet accsess at home u know. 1 thing that boards should do is get rid of .logic. as moderator hes a totall pri*k to n00bs.

    .Dino.

Dino you really should't rise to logics bait, and logic really shouldn't bait in such a way.

I for one think that there is a small bit of a lessening of the muppetry but its an effort that will take time, so have patience.

I'm sure many of you will be familiar with GameFAQ's http://www.gamefaqs.com/ message board system, which is probably the strictest forum on the net.

It centers around a karma system, which is used to implement different user levels, each carrying varied posting restrictions e.g. it takes a number of days worth of posting before you can post your first topic. Then you progress up a ladder of lesser restrictions i.e. max topics/posts per day, until you eventually reach a level with no restrictions, which takes about 30 days of posting (you get 1 karma for each day you post on).

But the real shit comes in with the "report post to a mod" option.
Posts get deleted for even showing one letter of a 4 letter word. The rules say you have to completely disguise the word. If you get your post deleted your karma is minused, thus reducing your user level. You can even get your posting rights suspended for a few days for something as simple as sensor bypassing e.g. shít or sh1t
Then stuff like flaming, trolling and general muppetry just isn't tolerated. Some English guy was talking about the World Cup draw, saying "we'll beat those retard Argentinians", he also failed to completely obscure the f word in another post in the same topic. Both posts were deleted and he was banned instantly.

There are something like 30 mods controlling literally hundreds of boards and upwards of 100 thousand users, yet the amount of muppetry is minimal from what I've read, which is incredible to say the least.

I suppose the secret lies within the general ruthlessness of the rules, and the merciless implementation of them. The mods have no interaction with most boards, so it's just a case of lock, delete, ban, giving would-be muppets no chance for pathetic pleas for forgiveness (part of the daily routine @ boards.ie, from what I've seen)

It's that sort of zero tolerance that seems to work on the net, where muppets are infinite, and giving second chances just doesn't have the same effect it does in the real world.

Well my opinion is simple. If you have a load of idiots posting crap such as pornagraphy from a static IP or IPs then ban that IP/IPs, initially for a week and if anything else of questionable content is posted after they come back then ban them totally.

Dino I presume you own or work for the Net Cafe in question. Rather than spout crap here about "its not fair wah" let your users know that you will not tolerate that kind of behaviour from them.

People have put alot of time, effort and ultimately money into making this community a success, they will not let some immature teenager trying to get their cheap laughs/kicks ruin this for the majority.

Always remember the Golden Rule "Engage Brain before hitting that 'Submit' button."

    Gandalf.

Sorry I missed this incident with the pictures
    Who did it?
Im assuming they have all been 12 clicked instantly?

As for the question of moderators, There are a few people who I think should be moderating the CS boards. The current moderators are in that catagory. As for the people who are jumping up and down saying "I want to be a mod" really should realise that they arent suited for the job. The real problem with the CS boards is that none of the old players who used to check it every day check it any more.

The way in which the "old skool" people act is absolutly unacceptable. Example you might have a thread like "New Clan - Players wanted" people instantly slagging them off for no reason other than to amuse themselves.
Or you might get a thread from some guy who thinks its funny that somebody asks "Any Clan want me?" and this idiot decides to make a joke of his thread.

    [Actual Example]
Then theres a thread entitled "LTM in Harry Potter OLOLOLOLOLOL!!!" Its not my board so its not my choice of what to do but I think that those threads should just instantly be deleted. There going to lead to spam and people bitching at each other. Not to meantion this has absolutly nothing to do with CS at all.

    [Actual Example]
    A thread called "linkin wtf"
    linkin is gay ok??????? 800
That thread should just be instantly gone. I know Mills left it up so people could see the example hes making but tbh other people arent going to see that thread, they wont look at it probably, its not going to disencourage newbies from posting idiotic threads.

I'm assuming however posted those threads have been 12 clicked, espically since its blatently obvious that sorta stuff isn't allowed. If they havnt been 12 clicked im assuming their on their absolute last warning. As for mindphuck he could have tried to help the situation by using the "report this post to a moderator" instead of childishly coming to this board demanding that these moderators should be watching the boards all night and day. Im sure he uses other threads for examples.

And btw I personally prefered when #4 was back on the boards, people say it was a flame war, but it actually made the boards worth reading, once it isnt abussive then its ok with me.

I really think you need to show you actually mean business instead of banning somebody called "fusion1" from the boards for one week.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

I left that Harry Potter thread there because it was in no way abusive and only Dino managed to bring it down to that level. Had it degenerated into spam and flaming, as you suggest, it'd have been banned quicker than you can say "Quidditch".

As it was, it was simply a quite amusing thread about someone who is a fairly well known poster on that board. I don't think there's any other board it would have been more relevant on, and it wasn't doing any damage where it was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Yeah I dont particuarly mind that thread, kinda stupid but I can understand it. I really would like to know who posted those pictures and if they have been 12 clicked.

Also one other thing, which you yourself dont do rob but mills tends to. If a thread degenerates into spam, just delete the spam, dont lock the thread. Its really annoying :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,684 ✭✭✭Kraken

or be really bold and edit their post or just delete the post or move the unwanted post to another thread then move it to bin.
