however, we do have some problems and any
    help would be greatly appreciated.....

    1) Hit counter

Html isn't a strong point of ours...yet...so with the hit-counter, where do I actully cut and paste it to???

    2) Pictures

You know the way when you point your mouse over a picture and the text pops up telling you where the picture is going to bring you.....

    How is that done?????

If you wanna check it out...

    http://www.portlaoisecbs.20m.com

    It's our first attempt!!!! :p

    1. Put it wherever you want really, down the bottom before the closing </body> tag is probably the best place.

    2. This is done by adding the alt attribute to the img tag i.e.
    <img src="pic1.gif" alt="description of image">

Some people surf with images turned off or in text-only browsers so it's important to use this attribute on images that convey information, such as your left navigation images.

Not a bad job for a first go!

Personally I'd get rid of the email animation and put in something a little more tasteful like and outlook icon or something.
I'd also make the text on the bottom nav smaller and use a CSS to style it.

alt tags won't work on Macs, so use title='blah' too.

Try Freedom 2 Surf. No banner adverts, pretty stable and you'll have the option to play about with PHP and either MySQL or PostgreSQL should it take your fancy.

f2s are quite good for some free webspace.
Try portland.co.uk as well. Both are ad free:)

www.statcounter.com is quite good for a counter as well.
IMO counters are a bit naff these days ( due to their ability to be manipulated), but you can hide them nicely on a page for your own personal stats of who and where ppl are viewing your site etc.

    Alright lads,

    Just a couple o' pointers:

    1. You should keep the navigation at the bottom of the page shorter. Im using 800x600 in college and the thing goes miles off the screen so you might wanna split it onto two lines.

    2. <META NAME="Author" CONTENT="yo mama"> LOL! Maybe you should change that. :)

    3. I see you're using NetObjects Fusion 2.0.2 Haven't tried it myself but two good text editors for HTML are Allaire Homesite (30 day trial) and Arachnophilia (free).

    4. If you want to learn HTML then check out some of the tutorials on the web. Go to www.Google.com and search for HTML tutorials. If you wanna be really up to date you can learn the new version of HTML called XHTML which is based on XML.

Hope that helps and Good luck with the site.

    Tony

    *sighs*
    it's finally fúcking finished!!!
    No more bollixing around. :(

    Just a few things...

    1) it's no longer our responsibility.
    2) any faults are not our problems!!! :p
    3) "yo moma" stays!!!
    4) Fusion rocks.
    5) the bottom bar canent be changed at present.

    6) Thanks for the help.

    7) Thanks for the votes of confidence!

Oh...59 pages, so how much should we be asking for????
The minimum a website goes for these days is £1000 with no limit on pages etc...
so should we ask for 4 figures????

So far, we have got ZILCH.
    miserable bastárds.

Generally one fixes a price (or at least estimates it and gives daily rates) before delivering the finished Web site.

So it's too late to get real money. At best they'll be in a good mood and throw you a few tons.

You really should have known better :p

It looks a lot better w/out the ads etc. and alot tidier:)

If I was to propose anything....

Possibly consider a horizontal navigation system as oppossed to a vertical one- not forcing users to scroll past no content areas to click on a link. The horizintal system would make it easy for users- which is a paramount concern.
Possibly also cut back on the use of animated gifs. Good static clipart is just as effective @ attention grabbing:)

Otherwise, for your first website- Well Done.

As regards payment... Obviously try to extract as much as possible out of the school- but if dont get much, just consider your work and effort as an addition to your portfolio for future opportunities when they arise:)

    :)
    Thanks!

It's the final draft but it's easy to sort out ne niggling probs in the near future ie. the nav. bar, the gifs, the pic tags etc...

It had to be up for last Thursday so we were kinda rushed
((bollix! we arsed around for months!!!))

    Yeh, that's what we're thinking.
Chances are we're gonna get FA from the sk00l so we can just hope for some publicity and future projects! ;)

    £50

    Swear to god.

If ne of you want the FTP password or ne passwords, just pm me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 512 ✭✭✭beaver

What was their rationale for giving you £50?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

He is a miserable, ungrateful, tiny, rat-faced, ignorant little bollix plain and simple.

I told him to go ne one else to do it would be VERY expensive but still nothing more.

    *sighs*
At least it's part of our portfolio at the present......until something *happens* to it........(((animal porn maybe...)))

Call us ungrateful but ffs....£50.....come on...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 512 ✭✭✭beaver

50 quid would just barely cover a half hour meeting with a designer in our place :)

If the dude is actually being insulting and ignorant about the work you've done I'd take it down.

On the other hand, if he genuinly thinks that £50 is in some way reasonable, leave it be. It seems to take everyone at least once to learn, but don't forget, the next time, get a piece of paper with a figure on it and both your signatures, if not a complex contract.

    Good luck,
    -Ross

What do you expect? You shouldn't blame him, but yourself for leaving the question of payment until after delivery.

Encouraging ppl to hack the site puts you in a very doggy legal position, btw.

So, don't feel too bad about it - I'd estimate the price of a site like that to be no more than IEP 200 anyhow, nowadays. So just put it down to experience and move on.

IEP 750 a day? Pretty high rate nowadays, even the big boys have been slashing their rates.

In fairness, you couldn't compare the rates charged by a professional firm with this site. Different leagues.

    Aite.

We know it's our own fault so I'm calming down at least.

It's still a kick in the teeth considering the hassle we got doig in the site in the first place.

    Ah well.....next time.

The £££ were going to go towards Fusion 6.0 but not nemore!
    So much for our business!!!!!

Thanks for all the help and comments!

a big picture of students ... unless they are actors paid to be students??? :)

anyway hard luck about the £50, but still, did you not enjoy designing the site? That should be all the reward you need :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Dave

I wouldn't be put out with £50 tbh, All of the sites that I have created have been for free, and for a first time effort £50 is good going. I'm only 17 so it's hard for students like us to secure actual decent payment.
