IEDR going against their own policy?

Okay, I admit I don't know what this has to do with IrelandOffline, but still, got my blood boiling a little...

Looking through the IEDR (trying to find info on who they exactly are and where our .ie cash goes), I came across their policy page. In it, there is something called the Generic Name Regulation. The first paragraph says:

    <snip>
The IEDR has no objection, per se, to generic names but only those which in its view would indicate that the name, if registered would infer certain or exclusive rights appertaining to it. The intention is to ensure that no domain holder has an
unfair advantage over another. While conceding that every registration, or rejection, requires an individual judgement call the Registry is nonetheless registering those generic applications which, in its view, are sufficiently broad or non-specialised or of insufficient commercial or general interest to the public.
    <snip>

So...my question is thus...how the HELL did eircom get adsl.ie?

I could post an enormous rant on this now, but I won't because it will take us miles off-topic. Suffice it to say that ADSL.IE shouldn't have been registered, but it was, and there's very little anyone can do about that now, unless the ADSL Forum, which holds the trademark, decides to challenge the registration. There have been other questionable "generic" registrations, but I think some of them were honest errors of judgement. I wouldn't like to try and categorise this one - as we all know, there are a hell of a lot of people out there who don't know what DSL is.

Also note that some changes to the policies have been put forward by the IEDR, to take effect on the 19th of this month:

    http://www.domainregistry.ie/about/new/oct01-rulechanges.html

Believe me Elana, you /really/ don't want to get me started on this. I could start a whole new campaign on the IEDR. In fact, I might just do that yet.

From today's Volta Net Gains newsletter:

Generic Irish Domain Names - IEDR Say 'Yes'
It's official, - the Irish domain registry (IEDR) have announced it has
*now* relaxed its ruling on generic domain names. Previous to this ruling,
any domain name considered generic was *rejected* by the IEDR, deeming it
anti-competitive, although some generic domain name applications were
obviously more generic than others! Now it seems anyone looking for a
generic domain name can apply with the comfort that their application may
be accepted. Still, it always amazed me how the likes of www.about.ie,
    www.baby.ie, www.campaign.ie, www.dance.ie, travel.ie (etc. etc.) managed
to get around that ole' ruling in the first place...

ekehoe ... So...my question is thus...how the HELL did eircom get adsl.ie?

Probably because they where the first to try and register it?

Now with the relaxed attitude of the IEDR (only two years to late) towords generic names I've noticed that many top .ie's are gone
sex.ie and Ireland.ie to mention two.
But there are still many many left, personally tough, dot com is king .

Just bring down the prices now. They're far too pricey. A more automated system is also needed.

um... I wonder just how many domains the registry itself has...

from what I can see they at least have...

    domains.ie
    domainregistry.ie
    iedr.ie

and had them (all) before the rules on multiple domains were laxed... (I could be wrong on that).

    grr...

I still want okeeffe.ie ... but that doesn't come under "generic" now does it?! I'd probably sooner get giganticpairofpants.ie !

afair peons (you and me) could only register their initials followed by a number ie dm22.ie
only politicians could register a domain in their name.

    Not necessarily true.

    I've just registered a 3letter (initials) dot ie thru easireg.ie and i'm a mere mortal :)

The IEDR had a number of domains prior to the introduction of the one domain per holder rule. Also I think that most of those domains above have a company attached to them.

I think they have internic.ie but they gave nic.ie to a courier company. Then they recently added pap.ie for their 'affiliate' marketing programme. However the lusers responsible for this failed completely to understand how affiliate marketing (e.g: amazon.com etc) works. Then there was their wonderfully obscure why.ie.

Personal name. You probably would get giganticpairofpants.ie if you had a registered business name though.

    The horror. The horror. :)

It would be diluting the IrelandOffline venture if it started going after IEDR as well.
