Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is it just me or have these boards fallen to a crawling speed?

It took 35 seconds from when i pressed "New Thread" to the new thread page...

Its really getting bad and its not my net connection, anyone else having the same problem? Are you planning to upgrade by anychance?

Geting the main page to load seems to take a bit longer for some reason alrite, but once i'm in it seems fine to me!

I concur, the boards have taken longer and longer to load every week or so for the past few months. They used to zip around for me on the old design :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,645 ✭✭✭✭nesf

Yeah, I've noticed it aswell. I'm at the college and it takes ages (relatively) compared to other sites, which should take alot longer to load up.

ive noticed nothing unusual (except the main page), and i practically live on boards. but then im using a t1 college connection :)

Even with a 256 (or is it 512k) coneection.

I concur, took me close to 4 minutes to post this reply on a 56k line.

I'm on one way satellite that usually gives ISDN like speeds for web browsing, and boards.ie is like using a 14.4k modem, or less even; a 9.6k GSM connection is faster on other sites, to browse it. Speeds are even slower when I switch back to 56k, via Esat. This only started happening recently. Pings and tracerts to the boards.ie server are fine, so has the server suddenly come under huge load or something? :(

slow for me too, 30 seconds on a 512k to post this...longer to load page from Humanities.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

Yes, the boards have noticably slowed down, especially this week. I thought it was cos i was browsing use IE on a mac in work, but the last few days have been hard going :(

ARGH!!!! Shame on you, some of you know better then to do this to my nerves!!

ok. deep breath.... if boards is slow please follow these actions:

    1. drop to DOS and type: tracert www.boards.ie

    2. copy and paste the results in here

I had one person mail me complaining that it was crawling only to mail me back to say his isp was having trouble with the US.

I cant debug vague moans. Gimme data :)

Don't be alarmed at the high pings; thats what I get for using one way satellite, which isn't the problem, as boards was much faster a few days ago.

Tom, I reckon it's not so much connection speed (but that's a bit of a problem), but the server load. It's got to dynamically create the pages for everyone browsing, doesn't it? That's gonna take time if there are 30 people browsing at once. Try comparing "slow down" with the total number of people browsing.

Victor, in w2k you simply drag a square over the text you want to copy and then rightclick on said square. In Win98 and 95 (dunno about WinME as aint touching that flipping muthaflippa) you've got a toolbar and in NT4 you right click on the titlebar.
Once copied just paste into the reply box and chuck a Code tag around it to be tidy.

    Any questions? ;)

When posting traceroutes please let us know if:

    1. You find the site slow or fast at that time.
    2. Generally you find it slow or fast
    3. You were d/ling something at the time (better not to)
    4. If you are in an office or at home.
    5. how sites like www.msn.com are in comparison.

Obviously something somewhere is wrong if people are finding it slow but I cant debug it and find out what without this info.

It COULD be a crap isp international connection
It COULD be a crap office connection servicing 20 people
Or it could be peak load on Boards (which we are trying to get metrics on too).

Also, try and see what size the page you downloaded was... its an interesteding piece of info. If we find we are bandwidth bound, we'll turn off sigs and the like.... see if that makes any difference but I think its the ISPs personally as Indigo has been a DOG for us lately...

Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming...

    DeV.

It seems that interland1-gw.customer.alter.net is timing out in roughly half of these traces - could that be the root of the problem?

(There was a fair bit of traffic on my link at time of doing the traces, but it was a pretty constant high-bandwidth stream off a local NTL server so it won't have messed the figures much...)

If i connect with eircom or iol its always the same, the 16th hop times out..

It might be a routing problem, ill try a diffrent isp maybe

does anyone know why my work computer would coome up with this

    C:\WINDOWS>tracert www.boards.ie
Unable to resolve target system name www.boards.ie.

    C:\WINDOWS>tracert www.msn.com
Unable to resolve target system name www.msn.com.

    as i have no idea

but i agree that the boards seems to be running slower than it used to though i have no idea why. I am not blaming boards as some other sites are also

    Type: traceroute www.boards.ie

I wouldn't say it's a problem with connections, I'd say it's more to do with the load on the server.

I also have found that the response from boards.ie has gone downhill. When I try to tracert from work I get all "Request timed out", I guess the IT dept must have something set somewhere but the response from all other sites is the same as before. I will see what I get from home tonight from my superb 33.6 Eircom line.

I must admit I have found things a bit slower too, I rebooted the server today and things speeded up slightly. But the main page with its 20 last posts is the slowest for me, I turned it down to 10 posts there one day to no avail, I'm not sure is it faster or slower since the gzip setting was turned on.

    Food for thought anyway!

Hehe I'm quite sad - you booted the boards server Cloud? I noticed. How completely sad is that :D. I've only noticed the odd slowness. On the line in work it loads straight up 19 times out of 20, sometimes it will stall slightly for 5 secs or so and then continue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,446 ✭✭✭✭amp

Seems to have speeded up a bit allright
