So what's the point of this forum? is this basically a web side to the open mailing lists?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,279 ✭✭✭regi

    Nothing escapes you guys :)

I'm sure Topgold will explain all in good time...

    Ah,
    Nice one.

Cool! I dunno how many times I must have signed up for Open only to have some mix-up with my email or some other mistake (I think I forgot what address it was going to a few times :o ).

    This should be good!

Good to have a more sedate side to Open. The cut and thrust can be a bit much for some. Would it be a good idea to pipe some of the list on here as posts and vice versa? The easiest way would be to set up a daily digest for the list and post that here.

    Why mix apples and oranges?
to be vibrant and hybrid everyone
would have to watch both spaces for
it to work. Right now no one can
    fully keep up with broadcast
    mail alone.

why not make a new thing for the
    other medium .ie boards.
suggestion: best of OPEN gets lobbed
here, post of the day/week and hard
facts for archive, all with approval
    of course.

while doing stats on OPEN for the
    community talk with Zeriously the
other night I kept comparing lists
to BBS's. On BBS people tend to use
Handles (cb term) and on lists their
    'real' email address, the reason?
    people are not comfortable with
web archived data to their name.
this is reinforced when lists get
    archived, users dont like seeing
old data coming back to haunt them.

I love BBS for reading matter of facts,
    frequencies, hacks, rumours, and archival
    data.

I like lists because as this post proves
I cant make a point in ten word posting,
and I have less regard for others that do.

    my 2 € cents

I don't nkow if the Open list will really port to a BBS system. I'd tend to agree with BHG (at least the bit that made sense in English :p ).

The majority of those who would post to Open would probably not do so on Boards.ie (and those, like myself, who would already do). I don't know if this format would encourage the others to de-lurk, either.

As for a digest/archive, that may be better served by an application built to do that.

Nonetheless, I suspect that market forces will dictate either way.

Some of the OT banter on the Open List might get transfered here and carry on forever if needs be.

This would be good news for my mailbox.

Its guaranteed JMCC will forever keep a nua/unison/eircom thread open.

    :p

Yeah and I'll rename it the History Channel. :) Actually I've been very light on Unison (been working too hard over the last few months) though they did lose internet-ireland.com and a few choice lodza*.com domains recently.

Will this be taking over from topgold.com Bernie? It's been inactive for a while now and I was just wondering has it been retired.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,281 ✭✭✭DeadBankClerk

    what is this?

  • Registered Users Posts: 179 ✭✭topgold

We are experimenting with pushing some edited threads from Open into this forum for the purposes of virtual desktop viewing through a ticker.

The threads selected will also port to an RSS feed for those who want to read Open threads on your own web pages.

Some students in Tipperary Institute, on courses I teach there, will be the subeditors. Within a few weeks, I imagine we'll expand to include talents of others who want to play.

I've let topgold slide because I'm working on investment for an animation studio and that takes time from pruning topgold's boards and content.

God knows! This board is a bit of a non-event, as most people prefer the email version
