Why don't you just upload it to your own personal FTP space on your account?

Because thats not very handy for other users.
I want them to be able to click post, and have it take the file there and then. Not to have to go searching for somewhere to stick it on the internet.

i've a wee vb component that does it, stole most of the code from somewhere, can't remember where, but you just select the file u want to upload and click a button and up it goes. tis nice, plus its write only and simple as hell. we use it to allow clients to upload files to our ftp server. gimmie a shout on irc quozl and i'll show u it

You upload to your personal FTP space on your account... then you use the URL UBB code and just give the address of the file and there you go, they don't have to go anywhere, just click the link and it downloads.

It also means because the actual file is not on UBB's server it doesn't waste space and doesn't make them libal for anything questionable posted.

You seem to be missing the point Hobbes.
I'm not talking about just me being able to upload files. I mean all users of the board. Everyone. They might not all have ftp access somewhere, and certainly wont have to my server. And before you say it, yes i know this means they can upload porn etc etc, but its for a private club so prob wont be a problem.

Well Hobbes may have missed the point but his point is also accurate.
We couldnt store files here, not only would we blow our HD in a short time but we would be more responisble for whats uploaded.

if you just want to upload files you can actually program this with ASP on a webserver to suck files from the client machine (with their explicit permission) but Nog's way of just buying a COM object is much better in the long term. saves time and energy for about 30 bucks.

try www.serverobjects.com and look for fileuploaders...

    Hi guys,
is it possible to allow ppl to upload files useing ubb board? So to stick in a picture they dont need it to already be on the web, but when can have it automatically uploaded when they're posting it.
I know you could just put up your own annonymous ftp site where they could store the files, but it would be a lot easier for the users if they could just automatically upload the file,

If you guys really really want to swap files in live connectivity, why not just go to AOL Instant Messenger and do it that way?

Or set your Napster or Gnutella client up pointing to a folder where everything's visible and whack the file from your local drives while connected?

Sure, both of those things mean you're both online simultaneously, but you could establish a session with any of those pieces of software and walk away to allow remote users their playtime when you're off doing something else.

he's not talking about swapping files.. more like allowing new or inexperienced users to upload files to a set enviroment as easily as possible.
think how crap all of them webmail a/cs would be if they didnt have something similar.. having to ftp up files to a server and then give a url rather than attach directly to the mail, meaning the vast majority of the webmail users (70%) wouldn't ever use attachments :)
