I recently got banned permanently from boards for making an abusive comment towards another member. Fair enough.

I was then browsing the CS boards and i came accross this thread:

This guy not only slagged off another lad, but he also started his own thread to do it! He only got a week ban and i think this is completly unfair. What he did was worse then what i did, yet im the one who gets the full ban. How come? Why is it that

(a) he wasnt banned like me

or

(b) i wasnt given the warning ban first?

I think you're all being harsh on Jabba. I propose we set up a fund to fund the fight to free his former freedom. Myself and some members of the Music/Radio board will be recording a song to hightlight his cause.

That bloke wasn't banned like you because Mills is nicer than DeVore or myself. More basic faith in human nature or something.

You on the other hand were banned outright because we dislike you and have a suspicion that you smell of cheese.

I agree that in general newbies(as well as anyone else) should be treated with respect, but this is overkill. I feel that these bans should be immidately revoked, well Jabba's anyway, because s/he aparently knew the person that she was "pretty rude" to. Having that said I didn't see the incident, so I would not be quite as good a judge as someone who did.

There is absolutely no way you can tell when people are real-life friends; more than that, it sets an exceptionally bad tone for the board as a whole. If you want to tell your friend to shut his face, do it in real life, not on a public web board.

I don't think that telling someone to shut their face is that big of a crime to merit a perminant ban. I would agree that this is a crime that should not have gone unpunished, but I feel that in this case a public and severe reprimand would have fitted the crime better, even if they didn't know each other irl.

Having that said I would have a very negative opinion of anyone who shows newbies or anyone else disrespect. In this case I would suggest that in the intrests of fairness Zero's account be banned,

Some people may be of the opinion that losing your nick is a very minor punishment. May I point out from personal experience, that this is not the case. Your nick is your identity. Building up your nick is like buiding up a brand name.

I am unaware of how long Jabba had been using his/her nick for, but, I think that this is extreme. I am aware that the line has to be drawn somewhere, but I think that if it was drawn any tighter, posts would be deleted if we didn't call a moderator, 'sir' and salute an administrator, every time s/he made a post. I think it is time to lighten up a bit.

Maybe I have the wrong idea here. Maybe Jabba told someone to shut their faces on several ocassions, and after several warnings Jabba still refused to stop telling people to shut their faces. Maybe Jabba got a warning(1 week) ban on a previous ocassion, and this was the next step.

<sarc>Besides all that I am a newbie to this board, and I feel that Goodshape should be banned for saying that to me.</sarc> I know that it is hard to find a way that will suit everyone, but Free Speach would be my main motto, and although there are times when allowing anyone to say whatever they want can be sometimes be damaging if we let people use it to extremes, but I don't feel that telling someone to shut their faces, as a first offence merits such a punishment.

Could Mr Administrator(who is he) please show us that the boards are not based on the assumption that newbies(or even regulars) are as fragile as eggs , and unban Jabba.

Just an point when someone suggested banning by IP:
Banning by IP address is not a viable solution to any boards related problems. It is way too easy to get around.

1. If dialing up, simply hang up and reconnect, and your provider will give you a new IP address
2. Use a proxy, of which there are many free ones available to connect to the boards.

This has been an ongoing problem and then when the mods decided to clamp down on such behavior (especially against newbies), as I gather it anyway, jabba told a newbie to shut their face, did this not go down well, and needless to say they were banned.

Now probably in an ideal world, should not have happened since the two people in question knew each other, otoh jabba knew what was okay and what was not and he still said this. This has all been said before, but this lowers the tone of the board overall, sets a bad precedent for newbies, seeing this kind of behaviour and so action was taken.

Jabba is now posting under an assumed name (jabba funnily enough) and so everything is okay.

Sure that this is my first account? Actually no. I first browsed across boards.ie a couple of years ago, and might have created an account then. Don't think so though. BTW are you who I think you are? As for my first post being made in 'admin', it was on the top of the list of topics on the boards.ie homepage.

I see your point. I didn't see that before you pointed it out, and I have yet to even look at the counter strike board, so am in no position to judge, what actions should be taken regarding them. All I really know is that someone was banned for telling someone to 'shut his face'. This imho in overkill. I grant that I did read some examples on the link you showed me that would have merited a permanant ban(such as porn piccies), but I don't think that that is one of them.

On the merit alone that there cannot be any worse punishment than a permanant name ban, this removes the possibility of making a punishment fit the crime, as the ultimate punishment is given, for what in fairness was a pretty petty crime(compared to other possible ones).

Just breezing through, seeing as I haven't much to say (And haven't had the time to read all those lenghty replies) but here's my thought for the day...

The problem with the CS boards (And sometimes other's also) is that when new characters sign up, and begin to read the threads created by either newbie muppets, experienced muppets, or any other kind of sad individual that has nothing better to do, nor the brain power to do anything useful, they begin to adapt to this style of communication, and will follow in the footsteps of others...

Therefor by coming into a board, saying your new, and telling someone (Real life friend or not) to shut their face, or **** off, or whatever nasty little sentance you typed, other people usually jump on the bandwagon and begin to draw out these antics, converting gullable new posters into a rampant swarm of devastatingly annoying muppets that wreck havok on the board and cause a lot of un-needed grief for the moderator's...

Seeing as their has been a recent crack down on muppetry, I've decided on my methods should I encounter nasty little snot goblins on my board...
In an event of muppetry on my board I shall:

a) Warn muppet on the Board to quit any and all muppet activity being carried out...
b) If muppetry persist's, send private message to Muppet and again request that all muppet activity be dropped, or something really nasty might happen... He/She may contract Pile's or something, I don't know...
c) If, yet again, it continues, I will preoceed to this board and start moaning like a sexually depraved bitch in heat and, after locking all muppet infested threads, will post here about the nasty little muppet and request his/her banning from the boards...
d) If Admin fails to ban this muppet I will find out muppet's address and personally spank him/her like a naughty little child, until muppet mends his/her ways and decides that helping old ladies cross the street IS the way to go...

Contarary to what some might believe I am not totally againest moderation/banning. If someone posted kiddie porn or something like that here, then banning them wouldn't cost me a thought. I just think that the punishment should fit the crime.

Arion, why do you continue to persue this matter? Do you think there is some sort of tribunal of appeal? Do you think the admins really have the time to hear arguments for and against such a thing.

Ultimately, do you think that with their day jobs, freemasonic duties and keeping the boards up and running, that they really give a flying árse bandit if some loser doesn't get to use the words "_the_slut" in his name? Remember this is one poster out of 6000 and there are much bigger issues to be dealt with.
