You've 3 main choices as I see it:

"desktop-replacement" e.g. Dell Inspiron 7500. Heavy machine but powerful, large screen (e.g 700/256MB/18GB/15.4"LCD).
"ultra-portable" e.g. Sony Vaio. Really thin & light but not so powerful, small screen (e.g 500/96/128MB/6GB/12.5"LCD).
    Cheap one. Winbook, etc.

I have an Inspiron 7.5K and the 15.4" screen just rocks. Big as my 17" in viewable terms.

this is as a desk-replacer and for travelling on business

would i get a dvd, builtin speakers with that?

    Yep, with the 7.5K - I've an 8x DVD.

Speakers are crap though (well, relatively - they're better than other laptops), good headphones are much better.

Check your eircom for some links.

Yeah, I got a Xircom card modem, works everywhere (world).

    There's also a built-in Winmodem option but.... smile.gif

Note, peripherals are BLOODY expensive! Talking £150 for a 10/100 card... :/

    Al.

    It's a Dell Inspiron 7500 650/128mb/18gb/15.4tft

Yeah that's right Alan. I forgot.

I was dreaming about that Xircom n/w card... smile.gif

Micro, I sent to eircom, got an alternative?

Also Computer Shopper has a review of 50 notebooks ... might be useful. I recommend the 7500 though smile.gif

its a cross between email and pigeon post. you write a mail and launch it in a rocket to some one nearby. al works in blackrock and i work in dunlaoire, about 5 miles apart. rocketmail is very quick and efficent for cases like this.

seriously its just like hotmail, yahoomail etc

    i need an actually pc
its got to interface with a atm switch and some gsm switches too smile.gif
and these things are very picky

Micro, you may be confused cos I actually did work for Dell, year before last [ spent my time on IRC and writing quake news when Ronin was away (his spelling sucks anyway) smile.gif ]

Rocketmail is really Yahoo Mail, when Yahoo wanted to challenge Hotmail they just bought rocketmail. It used to be pretty good but now it sucks just like yahoo frown.gif

Hobbes, that machines alright, but a little expensive. I haven't used MacOS since 1996! It owned Windows then. Pity about their marketing dept. I used to work tech supp for my isp who used exclusively mac, they still do, even the webserver is. I wouldn't like to see uptime statistics on that... smile.gif

Yeah, ok I'll admit, I'm putting off doing all this bloody documentation I have to do this evening frown.gif **** it. Still I know what it's like to get undocumented stuff so I guess I better do it.

After I check the other boards of course.
