Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The partitions of the Tech boards

I have to disagree with the current partitioning of the Tech boards.

If we take the following boards:

    HW Tweaking
    MS Apps / OS
    Nets / Comms
    Programming
    Science
    Security
    Technology
    Unix
    Webmaster
    Wireless

Will someone please explain to me why there's no problem that Technology now only has jurisdiction over Hardware (but not the TWEAKING of the hardware) and Software on non-MS and non-Unix OS's?

    Is there a problem?

If so , what would you suggest as a solution?

Personally I wasnt aware of much of a problem... but if you can point it out to me (rather then simply using logic) and suggest a possible alternative I'm happy to consider changes...

Personally, I'd be inclined to have:

    Hardware (instead of HW Tweaking)
    Net/Comms (why "Nets"?)
    Programming
    Science
    Security
    Technology
    Unix
    Webmaster
Windows (instead of MS Apps / OS)
    Wireless

    But then who am I?

I'd have to agree with Dahamsta's proposal, though the HW Tweaking board is lovely for talking about moddin stuff (something i personally enjoy), but it seems people still want to post threads asking people to help em clean their mouse or 'where to buy ram'.

    Just my two cents

    Feckin eurocratic politically correctness......take it!

Peronally Im not a huge fan of the amount of partitioning of the Tech boards for the simple reason that if i only check the nets/comms board i dont get exposed to things that might interest me or i might be able to answer.
When most things were in the Tech board it was like a big 'melting pot' situation. Now a lot of times in work, i dont really have time to check all those boards as well as the other boards i browse :/

I'd agree with that list - good call, adam.

Would "Windows" then cover all Windows based app's then? I would presume so.

Its also confusing for the newer poster as to which forum to post in at this stage. If you look at the amount of topics that are bounced between the tech forums, it seems that maybe theres too much specialisation in them?

Yes, just like Unix covers Linux, BSD, Solaris, GNU, Red Hat, Gnome, Abiword, ipchains, etc, etc. I'm keeping me head down on this from now on, I think DeV is still odd at me for suggesting this the last time. I'm still an effing "Community Moderator" for gods sake! :)

Dustaz, I see your point, and I agee with you, but personally I prefer the inconvenience of split boards to the inconvenience of having to wade through sh1te I'm not interested in. For example, I'm subscribed to everthing but Hardware, Science and (oddly) Wireless in the Technology forum, and that means I don't have to go anywhere near them.

By the way, I would suggest that users look into using forum subscriptions, particularly now the dynamic menus are gone. Now I just bookmark my "user cp" and drop into the forums with new posts, rather than browsing blindly. I used to do this before the dynamic menus came in, but I think the benefit (speed) of having no menus is more important.

actually one change, instead of hardware, id have hardware manipulation or configuration, that will cut out allot of crappy posts, and leave a hardcore.

i like the way in the games and after-hours board there is a games and after hours board, which is where everything and anything goes.

    They're fine.

    Leave em as they are.

I agree, they are fine as they are. The problem is people don't often consider carefully what board their topic is suitable for. I think people sometimes just stick topics on the technology board because it gets read more. Thats fair enough, but if topics were posted to their correct boards, they would still be answered. Most people still check the other technology boards, perhaps just not as often as they check the main technology board. If they saw more topics on these other boards, they would check them more often. Sounds fairly obvious, but sometimes the obvious needs pointing out.

Moderators on the tech forum should move any threads that should be on another forum to that forum, it leaves a link to follow and helps distribute the load.

I have to agree with Dustaz on this one. As a former newbie(!), I enjoyed going through the Technology board to get up to speed with computer stuff in general. Unfortunatly in my opinion, the technology board is becomming less of a hive of activity as all the interesting stuff has branched off into the other mentioned boards. Fair enough, you don't have to read through the crap but instead all that is left just isn't what it used to be.

    anyway, what do i know?

I'm happy enough with the tech divisions... I miss being able to just check one board for all elements of technology, but anyhoo...

HW Tweaking ... why not rename it to just 'Tweaking', to include such things as faster boot speeds, windows/software tweaks etc.

I reckon the tech board is the correct place for that.

Well at the moment it probably is... but tweaking 'all under one roof' makes more sense IMO.

The forum was started/requested for the discussion of the manipulation and modding of all sorts of Hardware, it was meant to be for things like case modding, overclocking, and all those weird projects you see on Slashdot like making a portable Playstation or N64s. Not just computer hardware tweaking could/can be discussed.

Well judging by the amount of off-topic threads, I'd say it could use a new name, whatever the boards purpose.

Might have something to do with it being first in the drop down menu. The Hardware bit too would make people think it covers all types of hardware issues.

Maybe add a Tech Support board. :p
