I heard a song today on Phantom, it started and ended with Paddy Joe Hill(one of the Birmingham Six) talking about his wrongful imprisonment. it had a country feel to it. At a guess i think it was Alabama 3 but i'm not sure.

Yes, you're right, it was Alabama 3. The song is called "The Thrills Have Gone" and it's from their excellent second LP "La Peste".
