Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

..ok.. probably done b4, but whats everyones favourite opening sequence to a film?

....just seen the start of Barb Wire.... flupin wonderful stuff :)

pity about the rest of the movie

anyhoo, apart from that piece of cinematic genius, how about Full Metal Jacket.... the hair coming off, and then the initial line-up with Sgt. Hartman telling them whats what...

"..you will not laugh! you will not cry!"
"..I dont look down on ****, kites, wops or greasers. to me you are all equally worthless"

    great stuff

Another awful film with a great opening is Swordfish. I'll never be able to look at ballbearings the same again :)

    Gandalf.

yeah, the opening scene in swordfish is awsome.
of course, everything is awsome when you have the ultimate home cinema experience :)
42" rear view projection wide screen, the whole surround sound thing going on. truely tremendous.

oh and you cant beat indiana jones and the raiders of the loat ark :)

The start of Gladiator was pretty slick also.

    And the start of Terminator.

Touch of Evil and The Player both had brilliant one-shot starts.

I also love the starting sequence of Raising Arizona and Goodfellas.

And the opening shot of both Godfather and Clockwork Orange are classics.

I'd have to say Fight Club too, brilliant stuff, good the first time and clever when you're watching it again, makes me smile every time :).

    Mmmm... Fight Club! Deffo'!

also- for the sheer hilarity and the enormous explosion:

    Lethal Weapon 3 ... "oops!"

The opening 10 mins of Cliffhanger are truely gripping,
I nearly fell off my seat, but as for the other 90 mins...

The Taking of Pelham 123 is also great but for the
jazzy David Shire score rather than anything you see,
its a great flick and on the box this Xmas.

Ditto The Warriors with Barry DeVorzons brill music score.

The opening of Scanners is memorable too! ;)

    Mike.

Damn it, you took them all. Raising Arizona has to be the best, from the banjo playing on the soundtrack to the classic line "You ate sand ?"

i have to go for swordfish meself, spectacular.

I was expecting a bad movie, saw the opening seen, changed my mind, but in the end I received a bad movie. Let that be a lesson to you all, always expect the worst.

    Swordfish Id say.......
Even though everyone says the rest of the film is cr*p i thought it was reasonable for a big budget thing pumped out by hollywood.

Ah yes, Raising Arizona, 'the doctors told me her womb was a barren place in which mah seed could find no purchase' :)

    Saving Private Ryan??

orrr .. (since I was watching it last night) ...

the opening scene in "Transformers: the Movie". An ENTIRE planet gets wasted. Well .. it gets eaten by a planet thingy (later revealed to be "Unicron").

    Beat that one ;) hehehehe

(since I haven't seen LOTR yet - Friday 19.15 showing for me!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭Da Bounca

    Absolutely, im going with FOTR.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭The_Bullman

is it just me or was the start of saving private ryan the oul fella + his family goin' into the big grave yard. the big battle whilst being sheer cinematic brilliance wasn't the opening sequence.

ah well, what do I know.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Celt

    Gladiator, no doubts.

ah well, what do I know.

I get your point, but I think you are being a little bit too pedantic.
I was gonna say Private Ryan too :(

Fellowship Of The Ring was outstanding. Fecking brilliant.

    Cancle that vote for swordfish......
Because it doesnt even compete with LotR. The more amazing part of the opening senquence of LotR is that every Orc had his own unique weapons and armour. Must have took years to do :o

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭Kulgan

Blade was fairly good as far as i remember.

    Fight Club-
mainly because it has the Dust Brothers tune pounding away:)

AFAIR The Matrix had a good intro as well.

Clockwork orange for me. In fact the whole first quarter of the movie is possible my favourite ever. LOTR was great too

Fight Club. had an excellent opening scene, what made it so great wasnt the scene its self but the rest of the film, the way its climated at the begining and then worked backwards, it wasnt orginal, but in every other film ive seen it in, had truely messed it up, wereas fight club brought that whole style of story tell to a new level.
the film was about think and looking at the world in a new way, partly cinical partly inspiring.

BTW blade did have a god intro, and not a bad ending for an action film

LotR's Had a pretty fu cking sweet opening, so did Fight Club,
but for me Pulp Fiction gave you a taste of the the the whole film, the restraunt bit.

If ya know what I mean................................

The Matrix. It's been cheapened and watered down by imitation, but seeing that opening scene in the cinema for the first time was absolutely mindblowing, jawdropping stuff.

For sheer scale and astonishment, Gladiator. LotR was bigger and badder, but somehow the scale of Gladiator, even though it showed a smaller battle, was more impressive. And made me want to shout "0wned!" more. :)
