I just installed a DVD rom and the problem is it won't play the damn things ,puter just hangs when I insert a dvd ,
so I swapped the DVD rom with one in another puter and that won't work either ,but the new one will work in the second computer so I think we can rule out the DVD rom itself.....any ideas.

    TIA

    running win me
    256 ram
    DVD =master
    burner=slave
    Matrox MGA-G200 graphics

This is a bit of a guess, but maybe there is a problem/conflict with either the drivers or the software you have installed for the Drive.

    Master/Slave problem maybe.

eh... are you saying dvd-roms wont work or movies wont work or both?

are -both- PC's running Windows ME? What movie software (if any) are you using? Is the DVD drive correctly identified at the P.O.S.T. ? What brand & speed is the drive?

Are you running Win 2000/Xp if so check your DVD playback software...

I just got a new one which would install but not play in win 2 k.
(Creative 12x encore (Panasonic 1240e rebadged)).

    just a thought...

Running WIM ME on both boxes
    Tried 3 different players,
    Inter video win DVD,
    Xing DVD player,
    and Micro DVD Player.

    DVD is a Toshiba SD-M1102
    Burner is a Creative 8X4X32

DVD won't play at all puter just hangs when I try to play one ,even takes about 30 secs to open the DVD tray ,works fine for installing software etc..

hmm... works fine for installing software, - so therefore it points at it being a problem with not having enough cache space or memory to handle video playback or having shite DVD player software.

    More questions! :)

Is your hard drive nearly full or rapidly running out of space?

Is there a lot of memory used up on your computer (by TSR's, etc.)?

    Have you tried Cyberlink PowerDVD?

Have you configured your DVD drive to the highest speed in device manager?

Make sure DMA is set for the Drive.
Try it as the only drive on the cable.
Try copying a DVD movie to the Hard drive (use something CladMdc to do it) and play it from there, if it still doesn't work then I'd look to DirectX/Video drivers.

If I remember rightly WinDvd used to have problems with Older Toshiba drives. Have a look for the update Firmware for the drive and install it.

If you have a via motherboard get the latest via 4-in-1 drivers from www.viahardware.com, otherwise dma won't work.

No probs, Macker... but I'm a bit stumped about it now...

...unless it's your graphics card or other drivers.

Try updating the firmware (as suggested above) and getting the latest version of your graphics card drivers, DirectX, any hardware accelleration app's, etc.

hold up... I don't believe you've told us the processor speed yet... if that's too low you may be screwed. :(

hmmm, i think the problem is to do with the drives themselves.
i have a problem with my dvd working when i put it on , as creed says, dma setting.
try pushing it over to PIO mode and see how that goes.

can you actually browse the dvd in explorer?
do you have any problems wth normal cd-roms?

    PIII 500 is the processor
I've just discovered it's reading Audio CDs as one track ????

I'll have a dig for updated drivers and firmware.

    Good news folks

upgraded graphics drivers and got it working
Although it still hangs when I insert the DVD so I have to hit ctrl-alt- del to stop the DVD player and then open the player and start it manually....in other words it's probly a problem with auto play in the softawre....so I'm off to find Power DVD 4.0 which I'm told is the best out there....unless you know better :-)

    thanks for the help folks

You should be able to disable the autoplay feature within Windows itself. Don't remember exactly where it is, but it's something along the lines of "Auto Insert Notification".

...and yes, - from what I've seen PowerDVD XP 4.0 is definitely the best DVD player software out there. I use it all the time.

Or hold down the shift key when you insert a cd/dvd until the light on the drive stops and it will not auto run.
