I was curious as to what kind of internet access services are present in other European Countries, so thats why I opened this thread. I was wondering how far are we in actual fact behind the other countries? Is there anyone in Europe with the same problems as us regarding net access?? Im not too well up on what Portugal has or France, and Im sure alot of other ppl are in the same boat as me. Might be a good reference for some newbies so they can see how bad we really are fopr net access. A friend told me that France Telecom behaved somewhat similar to the way Eircom are now, and that was 2 years ago. Any info well appreciated.

Thanks and a happy new year,

    Matt

Try Searching the post as there a guy that has another site comparing alot of stuff including prices and he has his own petition running ...

I'm not having a big but why are we always comparing ourselves to europe as there are many poorer countries economically etc ... that have better net access espically in the far east ...

I knew about that map above showing boradband connectivity but it doesnt show the kinds of services offered by these countries. Would I be right in assuming that all other EU countroes, with the exception of Slovenia, Greece and Luxembourg, have some sort of flatrate 24/7 56k internet access setup?

I have details of some services in UK, Germany, US and oz. See here. But I would be grateful if people would volunteer to research services/prices in other countries. I'm working on Sweden at the moment. Care to tackle some yourself Matfinn?

Maybe we should ask the €ircom mouse....
He seems to do a bit of travelling around Europe....[as evidenced;)]

I love that PhoneBill "what if" analysis Fergus. Very well done.

Actually I just keyed in a few more permitations.....
That is EXCELLENT:) Great Job. That would be brilliant on the ".com". Maybe you should speak to Niall about it. I know its PHP but we could possibly link it with a pop-up. Something along the lines of "calculate your phone bill here"

    [me very impressed:)]

I've got to ask myself, why did I move back to Ireland? I pay £60 a month on a phone bill that does not get me ¾’s the net time my sister gets in the in UK for just £15 dial-up (in other words if I stayed I'd be saving at least £45 a month). And the kicker is she does not like the net much so only uses it an hour or so a week... She even has the option of going broadband because she lives in a large town. Yet I’m forced to cut down my net time to bring my bill down from £120 to £60.

Ireland depresses me sometimes we've a bunch of jokers who attempt to lead this country that think a sudden shift to the health service and a few complaints about the Brits and their nuclear plant will save their skins yet the similarities between or mismanaged health service and our crappy internet ISP's is plain to see (there is no leadership and there is no drive to improve the situation, just Eircom sitting on their nice cash flow = us lot). I know things would be easier if I just moved to the UK but sod it I don't give up that easy and its nice to see others doing the same. When I’m more awake later I’ll think of something more constructive to do and add later.

Anyway has with most things in Ireland we’ll not get what we want unless we fight for it everyday and collecting information like this is an important step. But never forget that information is power only when used right. Hopefully you guys will use this information right. Otherwise to simply save me money I’m back to the UK, a place that has rather crappy Guinness and English people that take the piss out of the number 3 whenever I say the word……..Strange group of people but at least they don’t rip you off on dial-up charges, we’ve Eircom to do that for us.

Well, I've got my trusty Swedish/English dictionary and contacts, and will get the other Telia prices up soon....

But I gotta say after putting in that Telia Broadband price.. AGGGHHHHHHH!!

I mean.. the setup charge of €158.58 (IRP125) (incl. their VAT) INCLUDES the modem!!

And the monthly of €34.94 (IRP27.50) (incl. VAT) includes the voice line rental.

    And it's 512K/512K .. not 512K/128K. With no data caps/charges.

No wonder Sweden is predicting 30% broadband by 2005.

There's also evidence that Telia are thinking bigger than eircom in that they are providing services likes Games-on-demand to exploit the potential of a decent, widespread broadband network.

Meanwhile the proposed entry-level i-stream solo (including VAT, line rental, etc) is €151.33 a month plus €30/month per GB over 3GB. And the comparable setup charge is €326.70 (USB). Twice the installation, and at least FIVE TIMES the monthly charge.

I lived in paris, france for 6 months last year...

Basicly both France telecom and Noosnet (the cable comapny) where knocking at the door to try and get us to install their product.

The prices were about £30 a month.. FT was offering free installation but you got cable tv with Noosnet.
Unfortunately they both had a minimum contract of 1 year! DOH!!
I don't know if the provinces had the same service as I was living in the city centre.

I've added some France telecom services to the db, but could you possibly have a look into the Noosnet service for me?

Also, anybody else that could investigate the other countries mentioned above: I'm looking for the following information:

URLs to pages detailing the service and pricing details.
    Name of telco / service
The following charges, in the currency of the country in question, including VAT/sales-tax:
    - Setup charge (incl. ISDN upgrade if applic, equipment purchase)
    - Monthly subscription
    - Monthly line rental (if also reqd.)
    - Hourly rates for on-peak/off-peak/weekend (if applic.)
    - Hours included in basic sub (if applic.)
    - Megabytes included in basic sub (if applic.)
    - Per MB charges and thresholds ('caps') (if applic.)
    - Rated downstream speed in kbps

I was in Scotland for Xmas there (East Kilbride, just outside Glasgow to be exact), and was at a friends house. He didn't have DSL or cable, and I said as much to him that I was surprised by that.

His reaction was to say that £40 sterling a month was too expensive for DSL!!!

then I told him how much it was over here and he was absolutely stunned
