Ripping dvd's to avi ?

I was just wondering how its done and what you need? Do you need a dvd drive or can you connect and use a dvd machine from your tvt? :E Also what do they come out like? full screen? dvd qual? and how big in size?

with a 1333mhz machine using the mpeg to avi pack I can rip one in under 3 hours!!
