i've gone further back at the moment:
    black sabbath.
    they are
    IT.
now i listen to phantomfm or samplers and there is so much talentless drivel;careless, thoughtless same-y stuff out there;how can we listen to new stuff?
obviuosly its a vast generation;people that kno wme know that i love all sorts of music and am very open;but enough is wnough,i say.

    mmmmmm..prod prod ...poke poke .

Well I mean in terms of a big metal/hard rock scene nothing much with mass appeal, perhaps the Nu metal scene would be considered the next evolution of thrash I suppose, I dunno I've lost touch with the scene a bit over the years. If your ever in Bruxelles downstairs in the heavier side, you'll find that most of the music played relates back to the era I mentioned, its all good stuff if you like heavier music, for me alot of the newer heavier stuff has been commercialised to bits and doesn't have the same kinda buzz. Im 25 so maybe "Nu metal " came a bit late for me, not to say there's no 25 year old people that like nu metal. I liked the trash / seattle bands because when they we're huge I was a like most teenagers rebelling and angry.....now Im just angry hahaa.

You tryin to start somethin mister? !

PS Give your Dad a couple of Slayer/Testament/ Prong etc.. albums to listen too and see if he can get down with them.;)

heh. the only stuff he listens to at the moment is leonard cohen and johnny cash (sp?), which is all well and good in it's own right, but seeing as he doesn't quite get stuff like the strokes or and you will know us by the trail of dead, the chances of him appreciating slayer et al (hell, even i don't) are little to none.

oh, and sorry - i thought you were referring to music in general, and not just the metal scene, which i have little to no knowledge about, so i retract my remark.

As much as I love the old-school, I'm not gonna dis the likes of Slipknot and SOAD who make heavy **** worth listening to again.
The nu-metal scene is basically the up-turn of the cycle that happens with all music - metal had little to offer in the mid-to-late 90s and went way undergound.
Now it's back on top, and dance music has gone underground because it's burnt-out - but it will return, much like metal will go underground again in about five years time - so enjoy it now I say and don't begrudge it.
A few years down the road, everyone will be giving out because there's no heavy music anymore!

(oh ****, I hope I haven't started another lengthy discussion)

O Sleep, gracious of you to clarify and retract your remark, my compliments for the courstesy!!

    Man of Speed,
I hear what you are saying regarding the cyclical nature of music, The strokes and The hives are to me, the embodiment of that kinda musical cycle at the moment, I think they are very good at what they do, I like the songs and all and think they have a very retro 70's thing goin on there.

Regarding the nu metal scene, I wouldn't say I hate it at all or dis respect it, I just think the vibe is a little different this time around, the mid 90's did see a rapid decline in the heavier stuff, so true ...even still though there were a couple of good albums released in my opinion ..Far beyond Driven was good I thought and Chaos AD (I think that was mid 90's) , Mata Lao (Biohazard) and a few others.

To me the heavier scene has taken a more agressive, loud and less articulated sound, ya know..?? A lot of the stuff is catchy but technically it leaves me dry, from a guitar point anyway, maybe I haven't heard enough and should probably get up to date....

I liked the Linkin Park album for example, who are probably one of the more well know nu metal acts...if you compare the actual music technically to say a band of equal status within the "old school" scene I don't think the music stands out as much....I know Im goin on about the technical merits of the music and people will go on asking what Im sh*ttin on about but that's what I liked about the old school, well that and the sheer energy combined......the closest to nu metal I got was the Battle of LA by rage who I think were a big part of the metal/thrash/rock/rap cross over if ya get me, so can't really say anymore than that to clatrify. Im just stating basically that this is the reason I'm not warmiung to it

Anyway I fear I've already said to much...and am leaving myself open to all sorts of accusations here hahaha..

    Gotta work now ....
    Trev

I suppose musicianship-wise the oldies were great musicians - but they were the pioneers, so they were pushing and exploring the boundaries as far as they could go - both technically and in terms of heaviness.

I think with the scene now, they've added a third ingredient (melodic vocals) and laid back a little on the technical side and focussed more on groove (because it's all been done before - and in fairness, we'd all be bored to tears with guitarists still doing six-string sweeps). That's why the scene has gone huge in my opinion.

Does anyone think pointy guitars will come back in fashion though? ha ha ha

"no life till leather, gonna kick some ass tonight!"
The horsemen are drawing nearer, on leather steeds they ride, they've come to take your life"
"motorbreath, it's how i live my life, i can't take it any other way"
"so come on... jump in the fire"
    "Bass solo take one..."
"bang your head against the stage like you never did before, make it ring make it bleed make it f***ing sore"
"fall onto your knees for the phantom lord"
"another day, another death, another sorrow another breath"
"running: on our way, hiding: you will pay, dying a thousand deaths...searching........."
"leather and metal are our uniforms!"

all of htese are reasons to love thrash metal!

bang that head that does not bang

    Ah... 1993
The year Mayhem released De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas... :)

    Then came 1994...
When Emperor released In The Nightside Eclypse, and Cradle Of Filth released The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh...

And I was listening to Metallica at the time! :)

Unrelated to Black Metal, My Dying Bride released Turn Loose The Swans in 1993 also, and nobody has done anything like it since.

As for Thrash, I'm listening to The Haunted at the moment.

....the tbmc today and I have to say , if there is one benefit to this nu metal ...it is that the girls look way foxier than they did when I was seventeen and at saturday gigs in the Rock Garden , and theres a load more of them . Thats great for starters ..., I have to say SOAD are far beyond even Nu metal . They rock like bastards . And what about what Rage Against The Machine with Chris Cornell at the mike , are about to unleash on us , I mean fair enough theres no harm in workin out some new tunes but I just cant see Chris Cornell doin the back cataloge of RATM . On another unrelated matter I found my dad listenin to my Danzig album a few years ago . I was kinda proud .

but what about ripped jeans! (that was of no relevance, sorry)

and the best thing about thrash metal is that it took skill to play... no holding long chords, which however nice they sound (linkin park have a beautiful guitar sound) are just single chords for entire notes... compred to the galloping of seek and destroy or whiplash... no contest! i know which i'd rather listen to and/or play
