3ft ice slab crashes through car dealership roof

Workers at a South Carolina car firm narrowly escaped injury after a 3ft slab of ice crashed through the roof.

A local fire chief says the chunk of ice probably came from a passing meteor.

He says it couldn't have fallen off a plane as aviation officials say there was no air traffic about at the time.

Staff at the Acura dealership in West Ashley, Charleston, say the ice was about half the size of a car.

It caused $5,000 (£3,480) worth of damage to the roof and smashed into a new, parked car. It narrowly missed an employee, the Charleston Post & Courier reports.

Fire Captain, Ray Gorham, said: "It punched through the roof like you punch your hand through a piece of paper. My best guess is that it was from the edge of a meteor."

The firms parts and service manager, Mike Huggins, said: "Lots of police and firefighters came by just to have a look because nobody could believe that what was being radioed out had really happened."

Asked if the ice had been deliberately aimed at the dealership, he said: "I don't think the Taliban can shoot that far."

Samples of the melting ice have been sent to a laboratory.
