can anyone tell me whats the difference between a stick of ram described as "non-parity" and one thats "with ECC"

there's a few pound difference between them but what does that mean performance wise in a pc?

non-parity is just your standard ram chip, with no error correction... parity means it has an extra bit for every 8 bits used for parity checking.. meaning individual bytes can be checked to see if they are right or not.
ecc is a further improvement on this, providing further levels of error correction (hence the name).. usually only used in servers anyway so I wouldn't plum for the extra cost, afaik the bios has to support it anyway (honestly haven't a clue if recent boards have this or not!)... also its usually not a good idea to mix ram types... if you have standard ram buy standard ram pc100/pc133 usually.
