A judge ruled yesterday, in the UK consumers will be on the wrong side of the law if they buy overseas DVDs or computer games 'unauthorised' for the UK and play them on their PCs at home.

this will effect DVD and game imports plus chip modding of consoles, will Ireland move in this direction

Ah, knew that ruling in Tesco V Levis was going to pop up again with DVDs

Nothing to do with the tech aspect of course, it's all down tho the manufacturer being able to dictate the markets in which their productc are sold.

Well, Ireland has nearly every identical law to UK, Since we hvae become a free rule country, we have copyied every single law that britan has brought out, 5 years from the time it was brought out, so it may hit here in about.. 5 years :(

And just how exactly, will this be more illegal than what our DVD burners will be turning out?

Not in every case, but to a fair extent you're right (the two legal systems do have the same abase and are unusual in the EU in that they're common law systems rather than the codified system they have pretty much everywhere else in the EU)

On the issue of the DVD burners, hehe, no comment on the grounds that it may incriminate me at some future date.
That would be a criminal offence at common law (and statute under any copyright act we do have, including that new one last year, and EU directives) though, as opposed to selling goods in unlicensed territories, which would be enforcable via an injunction or damages following a civil case.
