NTL is going to drop Eurosport from next Thursday and replace it with CNBC Europe.

Quite sad really, I love Eurosport. All the alternative sports and the great commentary.

    WOT? No aerobics competitions? B*******

Didn't we used to have both?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭The_Bullman

Does this mean that there will be no more "relive" events, such as ballroom dancing, or tractor pulling.

All the same though, it will be a shame to see it go

I used to love all the martial arts programs, with the commentator slagging anyone who didnt perform up to standard *sniff*

Is this on analogue or digital or both?

I'll miss the "Rackau" hill climb if its the latter.

Well, it was nice to have, albeit for the African Nations footie, etc. Nice to see Cameroon and Nigeria in live, competitive games before the World Cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

I'll miss it for it's exhaustive coverage of the X-Games. That's all I ever watched it for....except maybe a bit of ice skating, but they've been told to tone down it's raunchiness anyway so.........:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

    damn, really??
They had some really good footie on.
    bugger.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 747 ✭✭✭Biffa Bacon

Does that mean we'll get Conan O'Brien back? Hope so. Anyway, why don't they drop Discovery or Nickelodeon instead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 932 ✭✭✭yossarin

bugger - since we changed currency, the term 'eurosport' has been amusingly ironic...
I will miss the tractor pulls though. :)

Yes, this had better mean we get Conan and Leno back.

    I remember watching NBC when I was a wee'un =*)

I'm prolly lookin back through rose-tinted glasses though, most likely pure crap :]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,425 ✭✭✭Fidelis

Well, NTL said that Eurosport had a only a minor following, but that that group of followers were the die-hard crowd. That'd be me so :(

If CNBC Europe shows Leno & Co. then it might be worth it. Still though, as mike pointed out, where the hell else are you going to catch the Rachau tournament!

So we won't be able to watch this year's World Cup highlights up until December?

I couldnt stand that 1 commintater. hes doesnt know anything about anything

Eurosport is handy for the odd Live Footie game and the Tour De France in the summer but thats about it!
[If you are cursing decision, its about time you got Sky then ;)]

Hopefully CNBC will have Jay Leno and Conan on in the evenings again like they used to :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 999 ✭✭✭DrunkLeprachaun

No more Sumo Wrestling. For Shame.
I remember there only being 2 good programs on NBC, but even they weren't very good, there was just nothing else on at that particular time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Oh great CNBC more Americanised sh!te just what we need. Eurosport was great for Live matches and sometimes had some very interesting proggies on. I will miss it.

    /Sarcasm on
Well done NTL giving us even more choice along with those wonder Telephone and Internet services.
    /Sarcasm off

The sooner the better March 1 comes around so competition can take these idiots on the better.

It'll still be on Sky Digital if ya want it.
Personally it doesn't bother me, but then I have no interest in watching the CNBC crap either.

i thought the only good thing on that was the tournament they held in Switzerland/austria/germany somewhere, with the boys on motor bikes, trying to get up an amazinglgy steep mud hill. fupping brillo.

I'd really miss Eurosport if it was going away from my region.

Maybe I'm odd, but I like wintersports (except fecking skating) and these guys give the alpine events proper coverage. Gonna have full coverage of all the SLC Olympics this month and next too.

i normally finish work at 10, so it was great to home and switch on the auld tv at 11 and watch the UEFA Cup/World Cup Qualifier/Euro Cham' Qualifier roundups.

They had indoor wind-surfing too. Basically a big pool in some French warehouse with massive turbines blowing faked-up wind. It was terribly compelling. I'll miss you, Eurosport :(

i liked watching the skating, the X-Games and the tennis alot :(.

I hope CNBC is'nt as bad as CNN. CNN just makes me cringe it's so awful.

Another event worth watching is/was the end of season shoot-out in the World Rally Championship where all the top drivers go head-to-head on a figure of eight part-dirt, part-tarmac track.

Great stuff altogether, hopefully now Channel 4 have rights to the WRC they'll show that prime-time! :D

Just come into #boards.ie and i will do the commentary..a staggered version of Eurosports.

Why would NTL drop a FTA channel and replace it with a channel they have to pay for, especially on the digital format..weird.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

It seems the digital service will retain Eurosport.

    Dear Mr Molloy

At ntl we believe it is important that we understand what it is our
customers want from our service, therefore we carry out regular customer
research on all of our services. The aim of this research is to gauge
customers' opinions of the existing services, and to see how we make any
possible improvements. The decision to replace Eurosport follows in-depth
focus group customer research carried out on behalf of ntl by two market
research companies: Catalyst Research Consultants and MRBI. The results of
this research were quite conclusive, indicating that Eurosport is one of the
least-popular channels in ntl's Basic TV Pack. These findings are backed by
AC Nielsen viewership figures that confirm Eurosport's low audience share.

CNBC Europe has been selected as the replacement channel for Eurosport for
    the following reasons:

Customer research revealed a preference among ntl customers for more
    fact-based television content.

Irish consumers have a strong interest in news and news-related
products as shown by strong newspaper and radio audiences in this country.

There is a high propensity for Irish consumers to invest in stock
markets and strong ICT presence in the Irish market. CNBC Europe is a
world-leading source of business, financial and personal investment news,
analysis and share price information with live 24-hour real-time coverage of
European, US and Asian stock markets.

In addition to business, financial and personal investment news,
CNBC Europe also carries a range of sports and entertainment programming at
    weekends.

This channel change has been carried out in response to the results of
considerable customer research. We regret that you as our customer are not
happy with the change, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Thank
you for taking the time to email us, your feedback is valuable and we will
    keep it on record.

    Yours sincerely

    Gillian Kavanagh
    Administration Team Leader

The best thing about Eurosport is their insistence on repeating football matches in full a few hours or even days afterward. So if you miss a cracking World Cup tie, or if its clashed with another game, you still get to see it. And the X games. And the weekly European goals round up. Its a travesty that its being taken off air.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Heres the response I got from them.
    Paul

    Thank you for your email.

The change to replace Eurosport with CNBC Europe on Friday 1st February 2002,has been a considered and well researched one. Two independent research bodies conducted the research and revealed a preference amongst NTL customers for a more fact-based television content which is what CNBC Europe delivers. The channel also provides entertainment and sports programs and broadcasts 24hrs.

We constantly review our channel line up and I welcome your comments which I will pass on to our Marketing Department to consider.

    Your sincerely,

    Anna-Maria Barry

I also whinged about the fact that they promised internet access and hadn't delivered well it was worth it to get that dig in as well. Well the way they are going we'll be watching nothing but News Channels in the future.

At this moment they are starting to make it very easy for me to change to Sky Digital, I wonder how many other subscribers they are pissing off.

    Gandalf.

What a load of BS! So, a huge number of Irish consumers got stuffed by the Eircom fiasco - and they'll do it again - is that what they're saying??

    Utter tosh!!

CNBC is dire, had it on satellite for past 4 years and it really is awfull, nothing but stock market reports and those tickers running at bottom of screen. The channel doesnt even show real news its that bad.It shows some entertainment programmes at weekends like Conan, fishing and golfing.
Im glad im on Sky Digital not NTL, if I was on NTL I would go nuts over crappy CNBC replacing a good channel like Eurosport. What have NTL got up their sleeves next, replacing Sky One for QVC! or MTV (I know its crap) for the even crappier (Magic - gotta be worst music channel ever followed closely by smash hits and the box)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,055 ✭✭✭suppafly

Yeah i'm definetly glad that i'm on Sk digital to so that i can still enjoyed the delights of EuroSport. I think i would definetly prefer it to some crappy american news channel. NTL should shoot there market researchers!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,494 ✭✭✭✭Victor

    So the basic package was:
    Sky1
    Sky News
    RTE1
    Net2
    TV3
    TG4
    BBC1 (NI) -> BBC News 24
    BBC2 (NI)
    UTV
    Channel 4 (NI)
    MTV
    Discovery
Nickleodeon -> Sat3 News (Ger) -> that italian news thing
    Eurosport
    TV5 Monde (Fr)

    So thats:
    4 public service channels
    4 commercial channels
    2 language channels
    1 news channel
    1 childrens channel
    1 sport channel
    1 science channel
    1 music channel

So now there is no sports channels -> you have to pay to get dedicated sports coverage. This seems like the thin edge of the wedge to force people to pay for all the other specialist channels also.

    Way to overreact...
btw, I found eurosport to be an awful channel, they used the same idiot commentator for every single sport and the sports they showed were for the most part held no interest for me.

Err no I actually enjoyed some of Eurosports offerings.

Have you actually watched its replacement CNBC, if any channel can be called awful its that.

Well I have decided I'm going to over-react by giving Sky Digital my business. NTL can go and fuk themselves.
