    Hi,

I have a date to have my NTL cable modem service installed. 512kbs!!! for 35euro per month. Initally they were charging £130 for the modem and £70 for the install. They are now doing a special deal to rent the modem for 5euro per month and have waived the installation fee. Anyone had experience of the NTL cable modem svce??? I live in Templeogue, Dublin 16. Can you run HTTP from your house??? Is it a fixed IP address or are they using DHCP??

    i've got and it rox
    70k/sec d/l's
you get a dhcp assigned ip
but there seems to be a long lease time so as long as its not disconnected (the cable modem) from the cable you will have static'ish ip.

What are NTL like as regards security?? Are they locking down ports and services from their end or is it up to th user. I was planning a Redhat Box as a router of sorts running IP Chains. What are you using?? Have you had much success in setting up the Cable Modem on differnet OS ?? Linux / SUN / Win2k?? As I work for a very well known multinational Telco I have a number of wireless Lan cards

Friend of min was testing it over a year ago when it was just one way (modem needed to send but that was freephone number) He got it all for free to test it in my area.. amazing download speeds!!

I would like to have it.. more so than ADSL considering Eircom suck.
MiCr0 do you know which is faster? I dont meen the numbers quoted by each i mean in real terms, you said 70k/sec d/l's
so i wonder what thats like on Istream

i get a fairly consistant d/l speed to good servers (downloads are only as good as the slowest point).

the service is two way - no call charges.

in terms of security - they seem to leave all ports open by default - which is good
you are best off installing some sort of firewall so.
i use winXP f/w and zonealarm PRO.
the wXP firewall allows you to open only specific ports, only 4 of the ports are open and all work perfectly.

any more q's either post or PM

The one they sold me for £130 is a Terayon TJ210.I'm sick now to hear you can rent it (lucky you).Although i was gonna sign up for the service when they initially offered it at £50 per month and am glad I waited and saved myself a few £'s or guinness vouchers.

One thing though I have had absolute nightmares when I power off the modem and try and try to reconnect the next day or so.I can not get an IP address and always get the error about the DHCP Server not available, despite trying it on my 5 pc's on my home lan under NT,2K and 98 so best to never switch off!

    GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Eircom's I-Stream ADSL reaches between 50-60k/s for most people.

Does anyone know if the service will be citywide or just for select areas of the South side?

Only Tallaght and Tempelogue. And thats all it will be for the forseeable future. They have no money to upgrade anywhere else.

    What game?
I get fairly solid 50 ping on Irish servers after some CS tweaking. About 80 to UK ones.

just ntl cable service in england isnt as good as that,
thats the type of ping you would get(probably just lower) on a leased line.
