I an trying to connect a Laptop to my PC , the PC is Windows XP (Host

computer) the laptop is Windows 98 (Guest computer) and i am using a

direct paralell connction. On the PC i set it up in "Make New

Connection" and on the Laptop i set it up using "Direct Cable

    Connnection".

When i try to connect from the Laptop it says "Connecting via Paralell

on LTP1, Username and Password verafied" then a box comes up on the

laptop which says "DIRECT CABLE CONNECTION HOST: Direct cable

connection was unable to display the shared folders of the host

computer. To see the shared folders, type in the name of the host

computer." When i type in the name of the Host computer (which i got in

the control pannel ~ System properties ~ Computer Name ~ Full computer

name) it says "Cannot find host computer".

On the PC in Network Connections it shows "1 client connected" and "

    <Unauthenticated User> Connected, Direct Paralell"

I need someone with some experience of this to help me get access to

    the host computer

sorry for the silly questions, will be relevant though so may as well get them out of the way:

Have you been using the network connection setup disc thingie that XP offers to make for you?

If not, what protocols do you have installed on both machines?

(right-click on "Network Places" on desktop - sll listed there)

Is this a proper crossover cable / null modem cable or just a parallel cable with a 25-pin male-male connection at both ends?

yes its probably protocols, you also need to set what folders / drives you want to share

anyways this site should to the trick, also refer to the links for other versions of windows at the bottom of the page

Try creating a generic user account on the XP machine (with rights to any shares you have), and use it to log in to the Win98 machine.

Had that problem when using direct cable. All you have to do is share out whatever folders you want. Reconnect and type in the host and then it opens a window displaying all the folders etc, that you have shared out.
