I've just invested in a guitar but can't afford lessons. Anyone know any descent 'teach yourself how to play guitar' books or websites?

AAARRGGHHH!!!! Do not start on easy stuff or you'll remain crap all your life. Start on hard stuff and stick to it.

Try something like Stairway to Heaven, Sweet Child O' Mine, Iron man.

These 3 are at an intermediate level.

Also practice lots and lots of scales... and some chords...but dont be just strumming boring chords all the time...

    GAH!!!
I ****ing HATE IT when anyone says that!

That must have been one of the stupidest and most DAMAGING statements ever. And coming from Radiohead, they should have damn well known better.

Yes, with enough practise anyone can do anything. But does that make it obsolete?
Therefor what would be the point in anything?

To play guitar properly takes a LOT of time, effort and practise.
I've been playing for nearly 2 years, and I usualy practice for anything up to 3 hours a day.

But of course, that doesn't mean ****, does it? Because ANYONE CAN PLAY GUITAR!

And of course, I still have a long way to go before I'm anything more than Competant on it... But none of that matter... Because! ANYONE CAN PLAY GUITAR!

Honest to god... That is just one of the most downright ignorant, and immiture statements in music history. Tom Yorke should've been shot.

Find someone who can play and leech off them.

    Failing that...

Take one song and learn it backward to the point you can jam to it in your sleep. Sweet home alabama is a good one for this,. At its simplest its a 3 chord stumfest but once you have learnt that you can work your way through the solos and have some fun with it.

12 bar blues is also a great way to improve (Type 12 bar blues into google and you should get loads of sites). Learn 12 bar well and you'll learn about Penatonic Scale fret w@nking.

If you can get through that then you should have a fair idea where you want to go with your own style from there. If not you can always buy a drum kit...

Actually..the song 'Anyone can play guitar' was a hypetitical situation where the band were saying that it would be hell if when they got to heaven..everyone could play guitar. Man...that would be hell. You goto read into the lyrics.

Try this brilliant site mate : www.guitarlessonworld.com

    enjoy ;)

    [edit]
    Tom Yorke should've been shot.

I just noticed that...You do realise that you have made 'The List'.

    I KEEL JOO!![/edit]

It's not a point of whether or not they meant it like that.
As WWM went and proved, just about every idiot can just come along and quite Radiohead like they actualy know something about music.

but as you say, theres no rules in music and its all subjective opinion.
any idiot can paint their face and listen to heavy music and pretend they know something about music too.

You're entering a world of pain, buddy. :p

If you wanna try me, and see if I know music or not, you can go ahead.
But be warned... You'll come out the other side sore and crying!

    Dude,

Learn the basic chords, get tab/chords of tunes you like from sites like

    www.tabrobot.com
    www.guitatabs.cc

and play along as best you can with your stereo. By far the best way to learn. Most guitar players are self taught, and IMHO you can develop your style far better if your self taught.

Also spend as much as you can afford of your Amp, as if you don't like the sound you hear its very hard to remain enthusiastic.

Don't think he mentioned wheter its an acoustic or an electric. But if it is an electric...invest some time trying out different amps. In my opinion the amp is more defining than the actual guitar.

    Angelwhore..chill please.

Hell yes. Unless its something like the guitar I'm borrowing while mine is in for repairs. the tone and volume knobs are hanging out and the switch crackles. action sucks and frets buzz. EEEeeeewww!!!! It makes my really nice amp sound sucky! :)

    I'm joking around.
WWM knows this, I know this.
Even the smiley that denotes humor in my post knows this...

Go with the advice above on picking a decent song - one that isn't too easy - and learn it (almost literally) backwards. You'll find that a lot of the big rock bands use similar scales (i.e., minor pentatonic) and that after learning a few major songs like Sweet Child O' Mine (as mentioned above), you can probably make a good stab at most GnR songs (including bits that sound tough like the end of November Rain, but are in fact pretty straightforward)

Zeppelin is harder to start with because of all the goddamn alternate tunings; Metallica is always good.

Of course, if you *really* want to play guitar you'll have to learn Van Halen :) (e.g., Panama, Hot for Teacher).(not that I can play those because my fingers just don't go fast enough :) ).

Have you tried playing frickin' Eruption? EEeek! :)

Metallica are fun to play but in terms of developing a style I don't think they're good because so many people play to Metallica! You will then just end up playing in the same style that everyone else is playing, and everyone will sound the same!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭stereo_steve

Just do what I do, smack it with your fingers really fast! Its makes a loud noise and sounds good. Plus I loud noise is played all the time in the charts and on phantom..... or you could just convert to dance music! Its much better. Hope this message helped!

I am of course contradicting myself, because "Untz untz untz" is just the same noise over and over and over again. But hey! Have some Ecstasy! You'll think it's a different "Untz untz untz" every time. JUST LIKE ME!

We have an idiot who's surpassed all other idiocy!

Anyway... To get on the topic:

Personaly, I used to play bass before I played guitar, and I used to take lessons at that. I then just took what I knew from playing the bass, and played guitar by downloading riffs from the internet.

It can just be so frustrating learning on your own sometimes... I got an accoustic guitar less than a year ago....and i learned about 10 chords and just started messing about for the rest of the time..

The in January i said right Im not learning anything.. So ive gotten my hands on some workout books and some tab books and music theory books..and well im trying to make it all inbteresting...and I must say if you are dedicated to learn and not expect instant results then the guitar will be your friend for life.

I used to look at my guitar and say "ok youve beaten me...youve won!". But if you have the desire the will the longing you will prevail you will overcome. I am finally understanding. where as before I didnt even scratch the surface...having a guitar in my hands was just a novelty.

I've been playing guitar for about 3 years but I wouldn't claim to be any good, as a) it takes years to be GOOD and b)i haven't been playing it constantly (in between weekends and school and holidays), so it's only recently that chords are coming easy to me.

I like Metallica and I listen to their songs. Some songs I can play, others i can't.

    Play what you like...

I can relate to this statement, that happened to me so many times, but I'm trying now and I love playing simple chord songs...it's not the best way to play but I enjoy it, and from chords, I can start finger picking bit by bit and then some solos, work my way up..I remain optimistic.

Good luck with your learning, it's great craic when a few of you are playing guitar and singing songs.

There's a great guitar magazine called Guitar Techniques that taught me how to play. It's maybe a bit advanced for a beginner, but is top quality all the same...
