A few of us have decided to set up a small lan for a while for file exhange, games etc. Just wondering if someone could give some tip's and tell us what exactly we need.

Would running different OS's cause problems I.E 3 on Win98 another 3 on Win95 ?

How much would we get a hub for as well?

Different OS means nothing. If it did the internet would be chaotic.
What you need:
X amount of NICs (one per user/machine)
a bollock load of cat5 cable
a hub or switch

A hub price? *digs out Maplin catalouge*
Depeneds how many ports you need and how fast
An el-cheapo 5port, 10mBIT hub will cost you about €30. (thats about 750k/s between two users, drops as more people connect.)

Though what you really want is a 5port 100mBIt switch, set you back about €130 (about 8mBYTE/s between every user, no slow down.)

What ever you buy switch/hub wise for 5 or more people is goig to cost anything from Euro 40 to about euro 130.

www.itdirect.ie do mostly 3Com stuff, but all of it is 10/100, which means it can have both 10mb/s and 100 mb/s connections. it auto senses the speed of you NIC.

you can get genius NICs from itdirect for about euro 22 each including VAT. U may get them else where for less, but those that ITdirect have are 10/100 auto sensing so they are a good buy for that price.

itbdirect.com have the same cards for euro 17.60 inc VAT and Realtek ones for euro 15 inc VAT.
