I'm on a mission to find the most depressing song in the worlld- you know, the kind that are so relentlessly grim they make you giggle and actually cheer you up. So far I've got:

"Weightless Again" by the Handsome Family
"No Peace for the Wicked" by the Only Ones (opens with the marvellously deadpan Peter Perrett intoning "Why do I go through these deep emotional traumas?")
"Suffer Little Children" by the Smiths - has me in fits of laughter from the first line

Ah, here's a great moment for me to shine...

Basically ANYTHING by My Dying Bride.
    But in Particular:
    Sear Me MCMXCIII
    For My Fallen Angel
    The Cry Of Mankind

Something surely to bring a tear to your eye:
The Gathering - In Motion #2

And I'll leave you with that.
Please, try and listenen to some of them, and not let my prattling be in vein.

    Albinoni's "adagio in G minor"

Easily the most depressing yet emotionally inspiring. The ONLY song to truly move me emotionally (and have the ability to bring water to my eyes)

For those unsure of what the song is - think of the film "Rollerball". The main classical music song played in that film. That's it.

Runner up would probably be the Barber "Adagio for Strings" (Platoon).

Incidentally .. both songs are a b*llocks to play in concert, especially the Barber Adagio (D minor ... -*shudder*)

Radiohead, definately, too many to choose from really, there's probably more depressing music hanging about but radiohead is actually good at the same time.

Are we talking 'bout songs that are embarrasingly depressing or depressingly beautiful? If it's the latter, everything on Adore (Pumpkins).

tindersticks - cherry blossoms, or talk to me: the strings at the end going crazy is just ... amazing

    1. The Shangrai La's: I Can Never Go Home Anymore.
    2. Handsome Family: A Beautiful Thing
    3. Smog: Your New Friend

All totally hilarious, yet immensely moving!

I edited this cause I had a few others but they weren't funny, just sad.

I was thinking more on the lines of ridiculously OTT depressing, not poignantly, beautifully depressing - I think most of you got the wrong end of the stick.

I used to add Terry Jacks 'Seasons in the Sun' to that list until it was ruined for ever by that bunch of tossers.

Ooh yes, you could add quite a few Shangri Las and Smog songs to that list - Walking in the Sand and All Your Woman Things come to mind immediately. Although when I saw Bill Callahan doing the latter recently he really seemed to *mean* it, which scared me somewhat.

yeah, i seem to have missed your point. if i had understood, i would've gone for smog, maybe back in school or something of the doctor came at dawn. i always thought he was kind of taking the piss in most of his OTT songs, but if he really meant all your women things, that *is* scary. building a doll out of the clothes of his ex-girlfriend? *shudder*

My favourite radiohead song. But I don't find it depressing at all, I'd say romantic is more the word. No surprises is depressing.

I find anything on Fear Factory's "Obsolete" album depressing for some reason.

    *shrugs*

Surely this is a basic guideline of American country music.

Maybe a thread on "Music when you want to feel sorry for yourself " would be useful.
