Who are the most over rated actors and actresses in Hollywood then?
For me Harvey Keitel has to be one of them...I just cant stand his way of saying things...

And of course that makes him an over-rated actor

back on topic: Tom Hanks, how do I hate thee, let me count the ways......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭][Spoof Jesus][

I didnt mean that just because i dont like him that he is over rated...what I meant was that he gets better parts than many of the other excellent actors who he stars with and yet he has no impact with his lines...U571 being one example...

Take Reservoir Dogs for example...Tim Roth is a far better actor...yet Harvey Keitel probably got millions of $ more and he still sucked...No Way Home starring Tim Roth is an excellent film...to see how under rated he is see that...it is one of his better films...as for Keitel...theres no hope...and he has been acting for years on stage and on film...

    Keitel is BRILLIANT!

But it's all opinion really, so I can't say anything.

I personaly think Robert DeNiro isn't half as good as he's cracked up to be.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭][Spoof Jesus][

De Niro got some bad parts lately...Analyze This was totally ****...it was so bad it had be quarantined in Xtra Vision for spreading Mad Cow Disease...

Kevin Costner is just shockingly bad...

    Hugh Jackman is crap...

Exit Wounds and Romeo Must Die was really related...they were just very alike...same type of scenery and costumes...and some of the same actors...dont know about the directors but they seemed pretty samey to me...Exit Wounds was far better...(Totally off the point there)...Also go and buy Predator on DVD...its excellent...

Steven Seagal, although I don't think he's too highly rated by anyone any more.
Tom Cruise.... aparently he's Hollywood gold atm. How the buck did that happin?

I think he's been pretty good in anything I've seen him in lately to be fair, especially Magnolia, excellent performance in that.

Blame L. Ron Hubbard for it.

I also agree about De Niro. Damn the worlds going to end. I too agree with AngelWhore. Al Pacino I dislike, I don't think he can really act, more like over-react. Hooo yeah.

I can't quite say that Cruise is bad.
He portrayed one of my favorite Characters from a novel EXTREMELY well on-screen.

    Three guesses who?

But he was quite quited to the role. A vein, arrogant and twisted bastard.

    Naw. Pachino I like.
He was extremely good in Scent of a Woman. Especially that suicide scene.

And the way he quite upstaged DeNiro in that diner scene from heat. Quite tense.

Dang, can't say I agree folks. Sure DeNiro has had some dodgy parts lately, but he's a great actor. He's just ****e at picking films lately (I mean, Rocky & Bullwinkle? FFS).

Pacino, also great. Tom Cruise is actually pretty good. I used to think he was just eye-candy (somewhat) aswell, but after seeing him in Interview With The Vampire, then Magnolia. Sheesh, that boy can act when he wants to.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Denzel Washington is over-rated. Sure he was good in a few things, but he always seems to be playing the same character over and over again. Tom Hanks aswell. Castaway is the biggest heap of dung ever. A film full of Tom Hanks. Oh yeah. Note the sarcasm.

Also Julia Roberts. She's probably not over rated, but she just annoys me.

Kevin Costner is just shockingly bad...

    Nuff said on the subject!

OK seems we are running a Godfather bashing here.. De Nero/Pacino!! Whats the story?

De nero was great in Ronin, I like that film a lot and not because of the car chases!

Pacino yes scent of a woman was goos, Godfather was excellent and he plays the best evil guy short of Christopher Lee! Devils Advocate he carried that film.. Keunu Reeves now.. there is an OVER rated actor! Up there with Costner... He has his moments but will always be that surfer from Point Break and that looser from Bill and Ted... its always there in his voice! Good in Matrix but that was the film.. not him

blah blah blah,. any more thoughts?

Keitel part-financed/co-produced Reservoir Dogs, so.. naturally, he got more $$$.

Does anyone actually *rate* Keanu Reeves as an actor? He's fine in those undemanding, white-trash American roles, but sheesh, whoever told him he could do accents should be shot. But I thought that was the majority's opinion.

Much as I hate Tom Cruise (he just has one of those faces you want to slap), I do have to agree with Angelwhore that he was surprisingly convincing as Mr. L., and looked different enough form his usual all-American toothy-grin self for me to able to supend disbelief. I can take him when he's playing smug annoying bastards, 'cause he does that quite well. Funnily enough I feel the same way about his ex-missus.

Just to raise the tone a little - Lord Larry Olivier.
I fine stage actor, not bad in his younger days on screen but hopless ham after about 60.

    Mike.

Yes indeed Kevin Costner is as bad an prolly worse than is realised by most ppl. Take it from someone who has acted in the same film as him.
    Yes, I'm being Serious!

    Also John Travolta,
I think it must be an L. Ron Hubbard thing as Marcus pointed out because both him and Cruise used to be "Good"- I'm talking Grease and Risky Business here! Nothing but shíte lately by both of them!

The answer is Lestat in Interview With the Vampire. Cruise's performance even humbled Anne Rice who objected to it when he was casted as Lestat. It's a shame the origianl crew who made this movie has nothing to do with the sequal based on the 3rd book. I don't understand why people dislike Tom Cruise so much, he's been in lots of good movies. He's going to be in Minority Report which looks great from a short clip they showed on Film2002 a while ago. Just hope Spielberg don't do his usual "this is so mushy I think I wanna puke" endings.

As for who I think is over-rated, Sean Connery comes to mind! Yes he's ultra cool but he's limited to playing all his role in the same suave manner with a scottish accent.

I'd have to say - De niro & Pacino are two of the most fantastic actors, IMHO

    Cruise I really like too

And Tom Hanks - I think the guy is absolutely brilliant, I could never understand why people not only dislike him, but actually detest him:confused:

Not saying this to be different mind, I'm just dumb founded by some of your choices...

It's interesting to see how people's opinions differ so radically though:)

    Peirce? Brosnan.

he was absolutly dire in Taylor of Panama. He sucked so bad infact that i walked out halfway through the movie. I rarely ever do that because im a cheap bastard and want to get my moneys worth. That in itself says a lot.

He wasnt that good in The World Is Not Enough.

Timothy Dalton was way better by my standards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Goldeneye was the only good Bond film with Brosnan in it. And quite a good film it was too!

I agree... Dalton was far better.
It's such a pity he was only in two of them. They were far better films than the last couple of outings.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

Tom Hanks. Die die die, you worthless second-rate ham.

George Clooney is usually entertaining enough, but he's never played any role other than, um, George Clooney. He's not a great actor.

Have to disagree on both Cruise and Travolta. Cruise is a fine actor; he spent most of his early career restricted to "pretty boy" roles which he could do with one hand tied behind his back. Interview with a Vampire, Magnolia and Vanilla Sky all prove that the guy can chew up the scenery when he needs to. In many ways his career is like Brad Pitts; early years spent as prettyboy decoration with no lines to say, then bang, you've got roles like Fight Club.

Travolta has picked some excellent roles and done well in them. He doesn't have a huge amount of range, but a film like Face/Off had him providing a really good sparring partner for Nic Cage (a superb actor, for my money).

I loved the Tailor of Panama! Great performances all round, I thought; Brosnan sent up his own Bond role perfectly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 234 ✭✭Mistakill

brosnan can never be more than a hot-shot spy guy.

All his acting talents consist of a cute little puppy face and a hard "I s**t bricks for a living".

    Over rated actor=Jon Voigt

I thought Tom Cruse was fantastic in Vanilla Sjy and Magnolia. He can be good alot of the time. Look at Jerry Maguire - the script is trerrible, it's a horrible movie but somehow entertaining due to the joint talents of Gooding Jr and Cruse.

I think De Niro is overrated. He's not bad but he's becoming too much of a characture. He's always Deniro. In Taxi Driver he acted more naturally. And he's awful at comedy. He just plays it straight and exaggerates his mannerisms a bit. Good actor in many films - he has strong screen presence, good in gangster/thriller movies but he should stick to that genre.

I think Julia Roberts is overrated. She looks ugly with that huge mouth and the only films she's been entertaining in was Pretty Woman. I haven't seen Erin Brokavich yet, that might change my opinion about her.

    Did for me...
I think she is quite talented actually- always has been- but I think its just been the roles she has taken that have limited her range.

Are you messing? Jolie has bad taste in films, but she is a good actress (did you even see Girl Interrupted? Don't base everything just on Tomb Raider, which was awful...).
Julianne Moore, if you want to see how good she is, watch either of P.T. Anderson's films with her in it: Boogie Nights & Magnolia. Julia Roberts, though one of my least favourite actresses, is actually good. She annoys the cr@p out of me, but she can actually act.

Angelwhore, agree with you though. Can we even imagine how woeful the Scooby Doo film is going to be?

Time for another customary longwinded post by yours truly. All of this is opinion of course(slightly drunken opinion too), an interpretation of art. Where to begin...

I agree entirely with Shinji about Tom Cruise- he's redeemed himself well in Magnolia, Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky. But even his earlier films weren't all terrible. A Few Good Men anyone? Ok, it's Jack Nicholson's heart-stopping monologue at the end that carries the film, but Cruise I thought brilliantly matched the character of a maverick attorney with something to prove, afraid to scale the heights because, as Cpt. Jack Ross said in the film: "...the memory of a dead lawyer"

Travolta likewise- Saturday Night Fever and Grease weren't bad films, just products of their time. Pulp fiction was undoubtedly his finest film to date, Faceoff was also a difficult role to play.

As for De Niro....come on! The Godfather Part II, the Deerhunter, Casino, New York, New York, many others. Absolutely chillling character actor when needed, also a hilarious straight-man in comedy. Analyze This and Meet the Parents were certainly small-town films and sugary, but he played good roles in them.

As to saying Al Pacino can't act...ohhh boy is that wrong. He's been a staple of the New York stage, acted well in film, theater, and small-screen drama. He's been in practically every medium imaginable, including small film and the spike lee animation "Krazy". He has also directed himself and wrote several very good one-act plays. As for his acting talent, if that wasn't demonstrated in the Godfather, Carlito's way, Scarface, Heat, Scent of a Woman, etc, I don't know what is.

I am another Tom Hanks hater(tm) I'm afraid. Why the Academy favors this guy so much, I'll never know. Yes, he has acted well in Forrest Gump, Apollo 13 and Saving Ryan's Privates ( think that was the name :P). But to me, he'll always be the ham-actor in Splash and Philadelphia, the weak emotional heart of a sobby/soppy story. His variety is limited, and his talent seems better suited to production than researching and portraying a role.

Kevin Costner...crap actor except for Dances with wolves...they say even idiots have one masterpiece in them, guess this was his.

Keanu Reeves: die. A worse actor on the Hollywood dream ticket I cannot possibly imagine.

Actresses generally tend to fall into one of two categories - good actresses, and teen-soapy actresses. The latter can all s0d off as far as I'm concerned...except for a select few who might graduate to the first category (eg, Kirsten Dunst, Caroline Shaw, etc.)

In my humble opinion, because of the barriers existent in Hollywood with respect to the age of women, actresses past a certain age have to be that much better than their male counterparts to land a role. This is especially true considering that few hollywood screenwriters write strong parts for women, they are often in the supporting cast, or mired with two-bit dialogue. I somehow find that films from a generation or two ago have cast more strong roles for actresses than there are today. Granted, today's roles are more varied and taboos have been lifted, but numbers-wise I feel certain there are less.

This thread wouldn't be complete without me listing my favorites too:

Actors: Marlon Brando, Kevin Spacey, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, Jack Lemmon, Van Heflin, Gene Kelly, Anthony Hopkins, Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas, Clint Eastwood and my favorite of all, Jack Nicholson.

Actresses: Lara Turner, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Helen Hunt, Vanessa Redgrave, Juliane Moore, Winona Ryder, with my favorite definately Lauren Bacall.

    [/rant]

    Occy
