Sort of an off-shoot of Azezil's series poll: whats your favourite sci-fi movie ?

Mine would be Aliens - quality film.

Aliens the Directors cut was excellent..
I would also put in the Directors cut of both Bladerunner and The Abyss!

Do you reckon the Director's cut of "The Abyss" was much better than the cinematic release? (Got the special ed. DVD last night - must watch :D)

Absolutly yes!! Especially the end.. you should notice the difference between them.. the end makes more sense in this one and actually gives a good message! I wonder why it was changed.. hmm/./

Good movie but i think that ship looks suspiciously like the one from 2001 a space od... oh hang on that was one of the best Sci-Fi flicks ever!!! im changing my vote to this one AND believe it or not the sequel 2010.. The books are better.. 2032 and 3001 are brill!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 875 ✭✭✭EvilGeorge

Hmm didn't know there was a 2032 but I've read 3001 - explains it all - pretty good.

Stargate (I don't think Back to the Future is considered Science Fiction)

    Event Horizon.

Followed by Aliens and T2... But Event Horizon is my personal favourite by miles.

You can't beat some good ol' Sly action and Sandra Bullock in tights. Some great scenes in that movie; "be well John Spartan" and the glow rods kick ass!

As for Waterworld, it takes an acquired taste to appreciate its marvel :)

Aliens: Special edition - A clear number 1 here.

    Many cool films listed though.

One small point, Star Trek II is the best Trek film, with first contact a not too distant second. Anyone who disagrees is obviously a muppet with issues.

dunno some awesome films there are, and I think Empire Strikes Back should be in there somewhere

Then I concur with Aliens, Blade Runner, Stargate, and most of the other films listed here, but I gotta say I wasn't too pushed about Event Horizon

    Pitch Black

What is everyones fascination with Blade Runner? I saw it for the first time on TG4 about 2 weeks ago and I was quite dissapointed. It wasn't anymore spectacular than a run of the mill cop drama or an episode of Star Trek.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

I feel the same way as you Fidelis.. i don't get the whole aw and wonderment others seem to have for it either.

Starwars IV (love the first 2 but VI wasnt as good)
    Starwars V (as above)
BTTF (ive decided that this film counts as sci-fi)

    Blade Runner
    Planet of the Apes (1968)
    The Terminator

Keep in mind this movie was first released in 1982. If you hadn't seen it until recently, then you'd have already seen every original idea in it spun-off in heaps of movies and series.

Alien... or, no.. The Terminator... or maybe Star Wars V.. or IV..... oh, wait.. Bladerunner (Sp. Ed.); deffo.

    ...then again, what about 2001??!...

    and, of corse, R.O.T.O.R.

Blade Runner is art! Not a shoot 'em up action spectacular, which is how Orion Pictures tried to sell the film on its 1982 release, no wonder it flopped at the time....

    Mike.

Event Horizon is probably my favourite.
Is Cube the one where all the people are trapped inside this big cube and they all have a specific skill that when they work together they can get out? Like there was a cop and an autistic(sp) guy and an escape artist and so on. If that is the film then yeah I really like that too, wouldnt mind seeing it again.
I have to say I didnt like Bladerunner at all, twas a bit boring IMO.

    2001
    Bladerunner
    Alien
    The Cube
    Akira
    Aliens
    Dune
    Mad Max
    Forbidden Planet
The day the earth stood still
Invasion of the bodysnatchers (Donald Sutherland version)
War of the World (1950's clasic)
    The Fly (1950's ver.)
Total Recall (as it's a very good movie of a philip K. dick short story)
The Last Startfighter (clasic 80's :)

saying blade runner is like any movie is that’s like when a girl I know said that she did not see what the big deal was with Casablanca as it was so corny as it had all been done before. They are the originals.

    preditor 1
    Aliien 2
    T2
    Cube
Hellraiser (more horror but still sci-fi)
    Pitch black
    Star wars?
Mad max trilogy (the second one was the best IMO)
im not sure if this counts (its an interactive movie) but Wingcommander. Not the actually movie but the 4 CD pack.
Blade Runner. All of 'em. end sequence of directors cut is a classic.
