    Hi kids,

What's the cheapest internet access for home users you can recommend - I'm on eircom.net at the moment, 1p (1,27c) per minute off peak but they screw you if you go online during the day.

Just got my phone bill - have to either find a cheaper solution or start surfing less.... :(

    Any (reliable) alternatives to eircom?

    Cheers
    JK

If you're in the 061 area (Limerick) you can try EliveFree who claim to offer free Internet access via 1891 numbers.

NTL is another option, but only in they give free weekend access - it's pretty much normal rates otherwise.

Otherwise, welcome to Europe's eCommerce Hub!:(

1891 numbers are not free - they are cheaper when used during the day - think its around double the off peak rate!!

tell us what area you are in, i am in tempelogue, dublin, and i pay £20 (not sure wat is is now in €) for 24hr access 7 days a week on 56k with ntl. so if you are in an upgaded area that would work out the cheapest, but as only a few areas have this, you prob cant get it.

Sorry, I should have been more specific, 1891 access is not free, but AFAIK EliveFree is the only ISP who will give you 1891 access without charging a subscription fee - that's what I meant by free, my mistake.

Lucifer.POD -> sounds good, I'm on the 01 area. Do you have the details of how to avail of this service?

What is the performance like? I presume more or less the same as eircom...

not sure if it available there, ring NTL on 1800321321 and ask about the TWO WAY NETWORK and ask if it is available in your area. and if it is, not only do you get the 24hr 7day access, you get tv channels and 2 fone lines. for Aprox €25 a month

if you are able to get this service, you are also able to have the cable service installed, Aprox €30 - €35 a month for 512 always on

Jk2001, I also live in Celbridge and this service is not available from NTL due to the fact that Chorus has the monopoly in Celbribge.Chorus will be offering this service in "two weeks"---its been two weeks for over a year now. There service will cost 25 euro and include your telephone line rental and tv channels as well as cheap internet access on a 64kb line(which you have to ask for at time of installation--free upgrade to a 33.6kb line----but only at time of installation ).There will also be the option of cable internet access through a wireless network or through your tv cable.
When this is going to happen I dont know but knowing Chorus it will probably be years.
    Ill keep you posted!!

A crowd called Educom (who I have heard of before but can't remember if that's a good or bad thing) have recently launched a product called "EirSteam" which provides two-way satellite internet access.

For always on access it seems pretty good value (comparing a months rental to a months dial-up). I have no doubt that some of the bandwidth maniacs on boards would take issue with the daily download allowances though.

The only thing that is stopping me from signing up is:
    - Refundable equipment deposit of €800
    - Must insure equipment for €2,500
I see their point, but I don't seem to have €800 under the mattress right now...

    LOL
    They got a 3Gb a month limit.
I'd go through that a day.
