i don't know if this is the right forum or even if it is legal so here goes.

i got a present of a Meteor Siemens M35 for Christmas but Meteor have no coverage around here and i suspect i will be waiting a long time for coverage. is there any place i can get the unlocking code so i can use my Ready To Go card in it. the phone i have for that is a 3 or 4 year old Ericsson T10 and basically it is knackered. or alternatively is there anyplace i can go to get it done. will Meteor or Siemens give them to me.

again i am sorry if this is illegal and against boards.ie's rules. if it is then feel free to delete or close this thread

It is legal with Esat and Vodaphone. I don't know the Meteor regulatory regime or terms of trade. You may need to 'buy out' the phone (usually £100 extra in credit - but oyu get to use those calls).

if that is the case it would be £100 wasted seeing as there is no reception here. it would be cheaper to go out and buy a new Ready To Go phone. :)

i have sent an email to the address given by Lucifer.POD and i will see how that goes

thanks to everyone for their help :)

Once you buy the Mobile Phone it is yours to do with as you want.

You have to buy €XXX credit from Meteor (Pay as You go phone) before they will unlock the phone for you because they need to cover all the various costs of getting you on the network in the first place (Phone, SIM card, Admin work, writing off networking costs). There isn't any legal reason why you can't unlock it yourself. Although you will of course invalidate your warranty.

afaik, Meteor will give you the unlock code if you request it six months after your account is opened. Not 100% sure about that though.
