Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

we could also run into the Four Courts screaming "die you ****ing be-wigged bent judges!". Its an even quicker way of getting ourselves tossed into jail :)

Ok, seriously though, its an idea. I'm not sure about having lawyers pay attention to us at all as I think (by and large, present company excepted, they are scum). Maybe its just me...

However, Einstein said "if at first the idea does not seem ridiculous, then it has no merit".... so I'm happy to debate the possibility.

Do you really think there would be traffic for it?

could be, i was gonna post a thread here askin about the legality of downloading movies etc.

and since i brought it up should i delete posts regarding how and where to download such materials?

I would have posted questions of legality under Humanities (or Politics if it was about the government). I think a forum like this would be diluting the brand new society section, which I think, has everything covered already under it's current topics.

    :)

    Yes, please delete such posts.

What you do in your own privacy is none of our business. But when we become the conduit for assisting illegal activities, then I get concerned.

Why not re-badge "Politics" as "Politics & Law", as plenty of legal issues and discussions about the courts, etc. already go on there... ?

Law falls betwixt and between Politics and Business / Economy. As 80p put it here

Although could this board be.... Business/Economy/Law?? Any thoughts?

Actually having reflected on things, What I said above stands but...
I dont think we should have a "Legal" or "Law" forum. However practical and helpful it "could" be I think given the subject matter we could potentially open up a veritable Pandoras box. Unlike other specialist areas of information discussion on the boards I think ppl would be under the misnomour that any advice they get is gospel and act accordingly, potentially to their own detriment- Its not like getting bad advice about installing a driver in Win2k or whatever- I mean potentially ppl could end in Jail!
I could see it being used as a legal advice centre on the fly!

Personally I'm not qualified to give any "airtight" advice and I dont know anyone else bar Sceptre (Seamus from Limerick) who are solicitors or are studying in the area. Also any solicitors or barristers I know would even think of doing so over the net. I tend not to respond to ppl who have asked me about specific matters to them personally because of the Duty of Care that must be exacted. Giving IrelandOffline advice is a different matter, but I could only predict problems.

If there are a legal issues and or topics ppl want to debate/discuss depending on its nature as I said above, they should be discused in the B & E or Politics forums.

[however much I'd like to see DeV hurling abuse at some Wigs:D]

This is quite a good idea, I think it could really get going at times,
But then we could hvae people giving out mis-leading information, so who are we to trust that give us legal advise?

Hmmm, if I can, I try to couch any advice I give on the Accommodation board carefully. I don't hold myself out to be an expert there. Now I'm not sure how far the duty of care extends for a solicitor / barrister? Does it extend to 'free and without obligation advice' (on the net at that). No one here is holding themselves out as a lawyer. It would be like basing your marriage prospects on what someone on the bus said (although they have better evidence on the net).

Of course if it is a serious matter, there should be a fee in it ;)
Client: I'd like you to give me a report for the bank on my building.
Surveyor: That will cost €500 and I can have it done Tuesday
Client: Oh, thats quite expensive, I was hoping for something around €100.
Surveyor: Well, I could do it for €100.
    Client (eyes light up): Really?
Surveyor: Well, I could even do it for €50 or €25 ...
    Client (confused): OK.
Surveyor: But would it really be what you want, would the bank accept it?
    Client (disappointed): Oh. No.

At the same time I am not advocating a Medical board. Whatever about throwing someone in jail, we don't want to be responsible for someone poisoning themselves.

This reminds me of the proposed 'Medical Advice' board :D
You're bound to get some know-nothing-know-it-all posting through his arse ... the consequences of which are a tad more serious than telling someone to rent a crappy movie.

    Potential for disaster'ometer:
