Let them have the CD burner.

Make them ask for the CDRs.

Consider publishing who browsed where when.

i was hopein to suggest installing a cd burner in work (a cyber cafe). we're runing on NT4, can anyone suggest any precautions i should make to restrict ppl from downloading child porn r other such materials. at the moment the entire system is very open, obviously we should restrict access but can anyone suggest specific methods of control?

and i would also like to discuss the possible moral issues...of course! wink.gif

I think CD burners are normal things in business support centres. Most of the ones I've seen have been in hotels or in serviced offices that are rented space in hotels. You weren't restricted from downloading anything but if the business wanted to do it, they could use firewall rules to block known objectionable content. It wouldn't be wise to invite child porn into your system because law enforcement can impound your hard drives if they find that kind of stuff and that would hurt.

Personally, I think CD burners are will be as common as floppy drives were in the 90s. But floppies can't hold the amount of stuff that people need to use anymore. If a business or a school has a photocopier, they should have a CD burner. It's cheaper to store information and easier to manage it with a decent digital index. Today's students need CD burners.

Err I presume your asking for a recommendation for a CD-Burner. Can't answer anything on the restriction side but the one I'd recommend is the one I have in my current system and thats a Yamaha SCSI CD-RW. It has never burnt a coaster and is nice n fast smile.gif

Why bother with SCSI? Once you have a decent burner that supports DMA you're set. You'd only need SCSI if there was a massive load on the server it will reside on Get an IDE PLextor 12/10 or 16/10, with Burn-Proof to sopt all those nasty little Underrun errors (About the only advantage that SCSI previously had was it was less prone to this, but with Burn-Proof it's no longer an issue).

Azeil, are you talking about Internet content filtering on a particular machine or using a method to stop users from copying certain data from CDROM to the hard drive?

i'm talkin about filtering what ppl download, within reason, we want to ensure copyrights are inforced, and prevent download of other unfavourable materials...
