Well i got the fibre optic 56k on friday, so im waiting for the CD with the isp and stuff, so i thought i would try it with utv interenet.
Guess what its so much better.
My ping is now 100-200 less playing cs.
Does anyone know if there is a faster way to get the disc from them than waiting 5 days for it in the post?

    well white,
I was waiting for over 1 month for my cd
keep ringing them up and asking them were it is
after 3 weeks I started doing that
I got it within 3 days after I rang
also their ISP is total crap
their router is bugger for online gaming
    just wait and try ...

what is the isp snl ?
I am planning on getting cable also in a while though ..
    as for your quesiotn Father
    fibre optic 56k line is
you are on an eircom line yeah ?
you connect to the net at around 44,000bps ?
with ntl (depending on your modem) you can connect at 56,000bps
and download at a full 56k speed
as for me, I am downloading constantly at 11.8kb/sec on a dialup modem

thats brilliant. considering the max throughput for a 56kbps connection is 7k/sec wink.gif

and fibre optic lines into everyones houses?
my god the futures here already and its using V.90 hahaha

I presume this means 56K dialup through the upgraded NTL cable network. Unless I'm very much mistaken, it's not fiber directly into the home but a higher quality copper cable. These cables connect a number of houses to a 'node' and these nodes are connected together using fiber optics.

This service is not to be confused with NTS's isp service over Eircom lines (which sucks).

He's right u know. Basically how it works is like a so. biggrin.gif

    You have yer 56k modem
thats 56 kilo bits per second
you devide that by 8 (56/8) and you get 7 kilo bytes per second AKA (7 K/sec)

Now OJ I'd love to hear how you get 11.8 k/sec from your 56k, when thats impossible smile.gif

    Come'on lets have it

    RentZ

All their traffic goes over their own dedicated lines to a UK interconnect point so a British site is likely to be faster than an Irish one.

I remember a lad telling me he can get 11k/sec downloads off a 56k leased line. Maybe that's what ye have.

You can get 11k a second if you are downloading pure text, or anything uncompressed. If you are downloading compressed data,( everything generally is) then you cant get 11k. Sure 56k is better than 48k or whatever, but theres no need to bull**** about it. On single isdn, I can get 9k absolute maximum, usually its 7.5 - 8.5k. On dual I can get 16k, usually 13-15k. So you are trying to say that your 56k modem is almost as good as dual isdn. eh yeah, good one. Do the math next time.

Yeah yeah yeah. Before the argument about download rates takes over completely will someone give me (who knows nought about anything) the run down on this service.

Where can you get it? Is it Dublin only? How's it work etc. etc.

just to put a nail in the download rates coffin...

text appears at higher than normal rates because it gets compressed by the modems protocol (V.90 or whatever) automatically therefore reducing the size of the file dramatically (as text compresses extremely well due to recurring bit patterns) thus it appears as if it is being transmitted at a higher than average speed.

example: a 10k text file reduces to 1k, this is then takes 1 second to transmit across, therefore the percieved rate is 10k/sec whereas it is 1k/sec.

    I knew that smile.gif

    as for my connection rundown
    its total ****e
    I always get dropped
I've mailed them loads of times,
sent them modem logs of getting dropped
and they just sa its 'under investigation'
I sometimes get a engaged tone
but its nothing to complain about though
