If they don't compete, and supply what they say, they will loose their customers anyway.

We have not offered our system / service on the Irish Market, we plan to offer a service later this year (July / Aug) when we have our higher return speed model available (64Kbps). With our present model we can achieve up to 300 Kbps download speeds (depending on source of data we have been able to eliminate most of the lag by modification of the TCP/IP protocol and the use of "Push" Technology.

If you require further information please call me at 01-4509480.

Sounds prety good just hope the kit isnt way to exspencive

That's what I got back from NTL.

I've read somewhere, may have been the Chorus.ie site, of a 2GB LIMIT ON DOWNLOADS. I'm not sure but if this includes the downloads used through casual surfing as well as downloading Mp3's etc, if it does this 2GB does not work out to be alot.

    Just thought you should know.

Oh and another thing, If I were you I wouldnt hold my breath waiting for Eircom to launch Broadband access. They dont even have the infrastructure needed. Be lucky if they have the capacity to launch it next year.

    Thanks for that NtL information.

I am getting on to the phone to them now, £50 flat rate is not bad at all if you ask me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 324 ✭✭THE SPERMINATOR

With luck they may either boost the limit or if we are very lucky drop the idea all together.Anyone out there know why they charge for over 3 gigs does it actualy cost them anything extra?.

    Oops read your post again.

Dunno if it costs THEM any extra, probably just trying to make as much as they can by exploiting customers who know no better =/

Where, pray may i ask, did you get that info. from ?

The fact is they do, the infrastructure is already there, and trials have been going on for months - its there, but will they bother go to the trouble of releasing it for the average jo (most of whom wouldn't know the difference between an apple and a pear) is the real question.

In fairness when i get 24/7 just coz ive got it doesnt mean ill be leaving my machine on 24/7.Ill use it mainly to get demos playing cs and general surfing so i dout ill even get to the 3 gig limit. My point was how are chorus set up ie are they paying for a backbone connection to yank land or the uk and if they have do they have to pay per mgb over a certain amount of traffic ??? If so im asumeing they have done there sums and figured if they get x amount of customers all useing the system there limit would be reach hence the 3gig limit per house.Failing that they could be just squeezing the heavy user hehehe.
As ive said before i was told by a tech line guy they wernt going to charge for over 3 gig untill they have there customer base in place and even then the limit may go up there not sure what there doing yet.I cant say how reliable this guy is but that is what he told me.

International bandwidth is paid for on a capacity basis. You pay so much per month for a pipe of a certain capacity and it is up to you to use it. This is dedicated capacity. If you buy a 10mbs, that is what you get.

Of course Chorus will be offering a shared bandwith service to customers. With this you are buying a maximum of 512kbs (or whatever). They do not guarantee you will actually achieve this.

I think the download limit is a very odd way of sharing out this shared capacity. At the end of a billing period you will have people using up their spare bytes which will slow down the connection for everyone else. Much better would have been to limit the maximum capacity to a reasonable level. You would still get the low latency which would enhance gaming without the need to watch the clock. The low latency would also improve web surfing etc. The lack of a limit would alow people do download linux distributions without hogging the bandwidth.

sort of on topic.. anyone recommend any download limit monitoring software?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 324 ✭✭THE SPERMINATOR

I think this may be the point of them not charging for overuns atm they havent got a system in place where you can check how much youve used. What i mean is they will probably know but unless they have a website or something you can check to see how much youve had its hardly fair to expect people to stay within the limits.
This is just a guess so if you know otherwise tell us more hehehe.
