    Irish Times Article

"Eircom reduces cable purchase by 20pc"

"Eircom has cut back on plans to purchase broadband connectivity
form the government and may drop a grant aided project to bring
digital subscriber lines (DSL) to the regions, reports the Irish
    Times.

The company has confirmed that it is to reduce the amount of
broadband it intended to buy from the government by 20pc. Eircom
had previously agreed to buy 40pc of the total connectivity
offered by the State under a public private partnership with US
    operation Global Crossing.
The government purchased over half the total capacity on Global
Crossing's network as an incentive to attract it to Ireland. It
then offered this connectivity at a knock-down price of £5m for 12
    high volume lines.

Commenting on the decision, an Eircom spokeswoman said, "In the
short term, market demand has not met our projections. We have to
    track this demand".

Business and Finance Online reported earlier this month that
Eircom would postpone its DSL roll-out. Sources within the
industry said it was well known that the beleaguered operation
could not afford the high costs necessary for a full scale service.
Both NTL and Esat have also delayed their dates for offering a
    full DSL service."

Err, this is refering to a transatlantic broadband link, that has been created by global crossing in league with the irish gov. The gov was then to sell on the bandwidth at wholesale prices, in an attempt to vastly increase the transatlantic bandwidth available to the county as a whole.

The fact that eircom is cutting down the amount of transatlantic bandwidth it had previously asked for dosent really mean a whole lot, and wont have much to do with when dsl will be rolled out here. Basically, its not really that relevant to how soon dsl will be rolled out again, and i dont see how them buying less bandwidth than they previously stated is 'fisting us' either smile.gif

**** Eircom, they are a usless shower of *******s, as anyone who knows me, know that I think that Eircom are a shower of three fingered ****ers, that couldnt pull their fly down to get at it right.

That siad, is anyone really surprised that eircom are backing out of a deal which could put them in place as the main part of the "Hub of Europe". They have ****ed up so many things before, why are they going to change now?
