trouble with clock on XP Pro

    Hi Folks

I know this is a minor thing, but that's exactly why it's bugging me so much. Ever since I installed XP pro, the clock on the right of the task bar keeps losing the time every few days. I haven't noticed a pattern to when this happens but you are guaranteed that it will happen at least once a week. It only happens when the machine is turned off, never when I've using it.

Has anyone any idea at all

    Nuno

Sounds like a dead battery to me...

There's a small lithium "coin" battery on your motherboard that keeps your clock running and stores your settings. It may be flat or close to it. Check your BIOS to see if it will report the battery's state; otherwise you'll just have to remove it and test it yourself (it's rated at 3V, for reference)

As a warning, though, removing the battery will cause your BIOS settings to be lost. If you've made any changes to the default settings on your computer other than setting the date and time, make sure to re-apply them after removing the battery. Also, you may get an error saying "CMOS Checksum error"; this is normal after removing the battery. Allow the BIOS to restore the default settings and then change what you need to as referred to above.

    Hope this helps,

xp syncs the clock to some internet based atomic clock so that shouldnt be happening. your clock is probably set to G.S.T(Gates Standard Time) :)

    HI Guys

THanks for the suggestions but the board I have /Asus A7V/ is only 8 months old, so I think the battery should be fine.

Do you think that this function of sycnronising the clock on the internet might have something to do with it because the clock usually loses about 8 hours or so. It also changes my time zone to something different ( Can't remeber which one at the moment ).

    Cheers
