Also if you press 'user cp' at the top of the page it will take you to your user settings. Click 'Edit Profile' and in that page there is a box for 'Signature'. Paste in your quote that you want as your sig and bobs your uncle:)

    Hello everyone,

Please do not ignore this important "POLL" on behalf of the Disabled and Housebound users??, Your votes are needed by this "Discriminated" against minority.

As I think I have stated before; The Disabled/Internet users form part of the whole community that Ireland OFFline are trying to get a fairly priced flat-rate internet usage deal for ??. So, really voting in this poll is just as important as voting in any other. The request and need is the same, Please keep this "POLL" alive with more votes and messages?...

    Yours, paddy20.;)

If you have not participated yet in this "POLL" - please do so, as the "winning post" is in sight??.. Goodness, there are some "very worried" looking "POLITICIANS" Just standing on the sidelines - Open Mouthed ??.. with astonishment, at the "cheek" of this particular "disabled" person??. Who dares to sput off his rhetoric in public- "How Embarrassing for us poor elected "public representatives" ??...

    Keep up the Pressure...

    Good Luck.

Paddy, you can't force people to vote!

This thread has been dead for a few days. Leave it go.
If people what to contibute, they will. You continuing to post in the thread is keeping it artificially current...

    Sorry.

    Reply to timod:

I agree with your sentiment that "you can't force people to vote."

But my understanding is that Paddy20 was given a certain period of time for this poll to run so during this time it's possible new people may join irelandoffline. By trying to keep it current while this period runs at least the new people will see the Subject Title and may decide to exercise the option to vote.

    Regards, dromoland

Dispite the efforts af a "powerful organisation" which has been "attacking" my computer. My security set up has tracked them down and I now will be referring the matter to my Solicitors.

This "Dirty Tricks bunch of hoodlums" had been successfully blocking me from gaining access to my polls, the Boards.ie site and the Ireland OFFline forum pages for most of today. However, my computer security system informed me of exactly - what was happening - who was doing it complete with all their details, including their "real" address??. The matter is now in the hands of my Solicitors, which should prove interestig??.

As for anyone who thinks I am going to let this POLL go away ??.. This poll will run its course until the 10th of April 2002. It has been active over the past few days and the pattern of voting has changed - it is not inactive or "DEAD". It is much to important to the Disabled/Housebound for me to ignore it??..

Using Eircom.net, Paddy? There seems to have been a problem for users accessing certain sites including boards.ie today.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45430
Looks like it's down at the moment (flapping link), as Esat are peering through the UK, but you can't get to Nevada (and boards) from Eircom.net (their routers haven't automatically injected another route into the tables for some reason).

I had problems, myself with Boards.ie as well as theregister.co.uk and a number of other sites.

Phew, Thanks SKepticOne - you may well have just saved me a load of legal costs??.. You are on the ball - Keep kicking it??..

Thanks - Once again, I owe you, it shall not be forgotten or overlooked?.

    Reply to Dustaz:-

Nice to hear from you again Dustaz.

For about the past 2 weeks my computer has been under attack??..

These attacks have originated from Telecomms business interests based in (1) New York, (2) Australia and in the past few days the most alarming "Malicious intent" No:- (3) is based in "Dublin". There would appear to be a connection between the type of attacks??..

They are attemptingto stop ALL my access to the internet i.e. Blocking my computers access to Eircoms local internet computer number??.

As I am currently in the middle of a research project in to the latest treatments available for :- Coronary Artery Disease. This research involves me conulting "Medical site" worldwide. I naturally became very worried.

Lastly, the latest attack happened about 15 minutes ago ??.. but they can not win as I have installed the best computer protection system I could find, having sought "expert" advice.

    More later.

    Good luck, Yours, paddy20.

Please describe these alleged "attacks" Paddy. I was under the impression that you were new to computing.

    I think the argument follows.
If you are disabled, then you are less capable of getting a job that pays well and thus less capable of paying for internet access. I think that internet access is an as yet unrecognised national service need. It will come to pass that the internet will become to be recognised 'rightly so' as an essential service that the state should promote where necessary. The state itself has recognised the importance and almost national service status of internet access by enunciating the broadband scheme in the 69 towns across the country.

Perhaps on day there will be a semi-state company like An Post or RTE that specialises in providing yet another national service ie internet access for a reasonable affordable price.

I would support near any proposal that would allow more people to get on line and become part of this whole techie revolution in the shortest possible time, if that means subsidies, then so be it, plus the disabled are commonly marginalised and for someone who is housebound the internet could provide realtime interactive links to the outside world that postage and telephoning simply does not provide, so perhaps there is a strong case to be made for such a subsidy, especially as the numbers involved would be small and would probably not amount to much of a financial encumberance to the state.

Dahamsta, I have tried to send you a lengthy reply re my "Attacks on my computer" but when I try and submit the reply my computer "FREEZES" and I have to shut it off completly. Then when I start it again I have lost the lengthy message to you and I will now have to leave it until after six when it will be cheaper, or over the weekend??... I have the local "Computer genius" coming to try and sort things out. He is the son of one of my life long friends so it will be free??.. I have spoken to him about what is happening and he stated that he had not come accross my problems before ??..

By the way, what exactly do you mean by "I was under the impression that you were new to computing" comment??.. I would have thought that "FACT" would be obvious too anyone??.. Please elaborate more clearly. What are you inferring ??..

    Your, paddy20 :(

I voted "Yes" cos I think the way this country treats the disabled and every other disadvantaged minority is a national disgrace.

The cause, notwithstanding the harm done to it in the course of this thread, has an unlikely champion in EU "Mr. Broadband" Erkki Liikanen.

Mr Erkki Liikanen Member of the European Commission, responsible for Enterprise and the Information Society "The Broadband Challenge" EICTA (European Information and Communications Technology Industry Association) Conference Brussels, 7 March 2002

All Europeans should be given the ability and opportunity to draw the benefits of the knowledge society. Digital inclusion is a social imperative and a duty of the welfare state. But it is also a condition for economic growth. There are different levels that must be addressed to achieve access for all.

Xian, I have just read the whole contents in the link to the European Press Office that you gave me - what an education - to a computer newbie/user like me?. I am now beginning - to understand all this techno - jargon DSL etc, that completely got me confused before. I will now be able to understand more of the technical side of different types of internet options?.. Great.

I was so impressed with the European Press release site that I have now signed up to it as a guest user, and will be visiting it regularly to garner info. I would recommend it to any one new "Like me - with a thirst for more knowledge, but not knowing where to find it, and not being able too afford to spend so much time "surfing" and "searching"..

Thanks again, You are on the ball??. keep kicking it??...

    ;) Yours, paddy20.

I have done as you requested Manic. It appears you may me correct. What do I do - as my computer , my internet surfing, etc has been playing up for over a week. Even when I send someone an e-mail it takes a long time to arrive. That is to the people who are receiving my e-mails , many are not. I have had a computer "whizz kid" in for 4hours today. He brought a load of trade "diagnostic" discsand other things with him - but he gave up - after working for for hours, and he is our locallly renowned computer genius. He is the son of an old friend and refuses to charge me anything. He even rang some other computer buffs from here - did as they suggested - but still got nowhere. He said he will be back tomorrow. heres hoping, any suggestions welcome, I feel undeservedly "under siege" something sinister is happening to this "newbie" but thank God I have friends in high places, and I will sort this out - Even if it kills me.

Many thanks, for letting me know about my PMs. Did you try and send me one?.

    Yours,paddy20.

Paddy, Manic, why not just exchange phone numbers. We don't need to read this sort of thing here. I think a lot of people are voting 'no' on this one out of irritation.

    To Paddy20,

Sorry I haven't joined in of late, but I've been laid low with flu, glad to see your three threads are still going.

However I haven't been wasting my time. From my sickbed I've been writing to several small local newspapers in my area to tell them of your campaign for subsidised internet access for the disabled/housebound and quoting the irelandoffline address where they might look in on this discussion for any background info they need.

I have of course also mentioned your other worthy campaigns: Email Your TD and the National Public Petiton ...etc.

From past experience I have personally found that when the small local press takes up an idea that holds potential interest for the many, it is often then taken up by the Provincial newspapers and from there it's just one more step to the Nationals.

Your ideas and imagination deserve more take up.

    To dromoland.

    Welcome back to the forum.

It is nice of you to "support" my contribution/suggestions re: Ireland OFFlines very worthy campaign on "behalf" of us all.

Where did the "Stars" next to my Poll come from ?. I was wondering what they are all about. Are they like those things that staff in that American Outfit called "McDonalds" are forced to wear?.. or are they supposed to be " A form of compliment" to my Poll - I am lost completely.

If it was "your good self who gave the poll a 5 Star rating - then what and how has one of them turned "BLUE" and what on is that supposed to signify?.

Thanks anyway, Yours, paddy20. & Be Lucky,;)
    :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,797 ✭✭✭Paddy20

    - I am still waiting for response to my "Query"?.

What are the "Stars All About", I know they are about rating a thread and someone maybe gave my "NATIONAL PUBLIC PETITION" the FIVE STARS (One now "Blue") Whatever that means?.

Anyway maybe "some" may think I am being "Petty minded", but if any "Post" deserves a star rating. Then the winner surely must be the - "KEEP Going OFFline site ??.. what do you think, ALL comments welcome - you can even "insult me" if you want, but watch out for - "You know who".

I would still love to know "who" awarded my Poll "NATIONAL PUBLIC OPINION" the Stars.

Listen they are "Very Welcome" and it was NOT me awarding myself - so own up - & Please, NO OFFENCE MEANT & I HOPE NONE TAKEN??..

I am now off to award some Stars to the " Keep Going OFFline Posting...

    Yours, paddy20.;)

Enjoy the five star status, Paddy20, you deserve it for your perseverence and lively debates in irelandoffline.

I myself also wonder what the blue one stands for. Perhaps it's an omen: there will be a blue moon over Eircom and we'll have affordable flat-rate internet access for all.
