lads just installed kazaa, great software, dead handy and all. but everytime i mention it to anyone its like "OMFG SPYWARE, RUN AWAY" , like what is the craic? i deselected everything at the install apart from kazaa itself, so does that mean this "spyware" wasnt installed?? neone know exactly what is going on? i checked program files and all that and no other application apart from "kazaa" has been installed. can ne1 shed some light on the whole matter?

    Kazaa installs a **_clint.dll that's actually a cydoor add.dll.
It also randomly opens pop-up's sometimes.

You could try replacing the clint.dll with an empty dll.

i was reading all the stuff on the net about kazaa, in previous versions, afaik, it secretly installed spyware, but after intense pressure was put on them they took it out for the latest version and have now given you the option of installing the other 4, afaik. cuz ive checked my computer high and low and cant find anything like spyware on it, ill run a check with this ad-adware thing but im never bothered with ads either :S

d/led that ad-adware app from www.lavasoft.de , done the trick, found that "cydoor", www.cydoor.com , i then removed it, started up kazaa only to get "You have uninstalled a part of kazaa, kazaa will now quit so you can reinstall it". so there you go it does carry some of that spyware ****é with it. :S

Well let's look at this logically. Now if we assume there's currently 6,211,444,849 in the world based on a forward projection from the 1998 world census. Now let's assume 127 million adults are online (figure taken from a Harris Interactive survey in 2001).

Now let's say for example 5% of these people use kazaa. That's 6.35 million people using kazaa. from my kazaa stats I usually see on average 1,063,352 people online at any one time so maybe the penetration is slightly less than 5% given that maybe only 1 of 3 users are actually online at any one time.

Now let's say Kazaa does indeed install this spyware which reports back to them your every move. What sites you visit and what porn you download.

If it reported back 10 sites for every user online for every hour of every day (which isn't alot) then it's be reporting 10 million sites an hour. 240 million sites a day.

What in the holy **** would you care if they know about one ****ty little donkey pr0n site you've visited when they're getting 240 million sites a day?

They're not gonna contact the F.B.I and hunt you down because you downloaded "Jenna Jameson getting it in the ass" hell they're never even going to look at it.

At best the stats are compiled into a huge list and sold for marketing reasons. It's not like a dildo salesman is going to call to your door due to the amount of porn you download.

    Or a sheep farmer...

yes they could care less. It's when they give your contact details to other sites to sell you crap. Or connecting to Amazon.com brings up recommended books like "Donkey pr0n, that is my bag baby".

btw some sites are already doing this. I suspect Google + Amazon. I did a search for "Configuration management" on google and then later when connecting to Amazon it tried to sell me a book on it (which to that point I didn't even know existed).

If you are really paranoid about cydoor and kazaa/Grokster then read
www.project-insomnia.com/grokster.html . It tells you in simple steps how to remove it.
